Wisdom’s Drive Fuels Western Michigan Hockey’s Rise

Western Michigan University’s star forward, Zach Wisdom, isn’t just scoring goals; he’s rewriting his family’s story with every shift. His journey from a childhood of hardship in Toronto to becoming a key player for the reigning national champions is a powerful testament to dedication and family sacrifice.

From Tow Trucks to the Ice

Wisdom’s early mornings were far from typical. He and his brother would wake up as early as 3:00 a.m. to ride in the back of their mother’s tow truck, sleeping until school started around 7:30. All the while, their mom was busy taking calls and helping customers, showing the boys the true meaning of hard work. “You just see that hard work. You see the blood, sweat, and tears that it takes to get somewhere in life,” Wisdom reflects. He credits these experiences for shaping him into the person he is today, emphasizing that his family’s struggles made him stronger.

Hockey was always an escape for Zach and his brother. “The fast pace, the physicality, it grabbed me and my brother and took a hold of us,” he explains. On the ice, the pressures of their challenging life faded away. “You get on the ice and then the whole mind just clears,” Wisdom says.

A Mother’s Sacrifice

Wisdom’s parents separated when he was just three years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his brother alone. She worked multiple jobs, including running tow trucks and working overnight shifts at Tim Hortons, to ensure her sons had what they needed, especially for hockey. “I worked several jobs to support the boys hockey,” she recalls. “It was a little tough growing up not always being financially sound, having to worry about the things that we have to worry about like when your next meal’s coming, why the lights are off, why it’s so cold.” There were times when the power was cut off, a difficult reality for the young family. Despite these challenges, the family never wavered in their commitment to hockey. “There was never a time where we thought we couldn’t do this or we weren’t going to do it or we’ve had enough. We just pushed through,” Wisdom states.

His mother always made sure they had the necessary equipment, like sticks and skates, no matter how tight money was. “She always provided that,” Wisdom notes. His talent was evident early on, with coaches recognizing his skill. “He was a super skilled player. He can uh see the game well. The game slowed down for him,” one observer mentioned. These compliments fueled his ambition: “I started having people come to me and say like, ‘Wow, you’re a really good player. Like, you can really do something with this.’ And I was like, ‘You know what? Like, they’re right. Like, I’m going to do this.'” Wisdom saw hockey as his path forward, a way to achieve a better future.

From USHL to NCAA Division I

In 2021, at the age of 17, Wisdom was playing in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the Cedar Rapids. He made a significant impact, scoring four goals in one game, a performance that showcased his scoring ability. This success led to his first NCAA Division I scholarship offer from Colorado College. “It was a good feeling. Kind of like, damn, like we’re getting somewhere now,” Wisdom said about the offer, recognizing it as a reward for his relentless hard work and determination.

He committed to Colorado College, viewing it as the best decision for his development both as a person and a player. However, after two years, his path changed. In April 2025, Wisdom entered the transfer portal and decided to join Western Michigan University. He was drawn to Coach Pat Fershweiler and the Western Michigan Broncos, who had just won the national championship for the first time in their program’s history.

Leading by Example at Western Michigan

Wisdom sought a program where he could improve his game and learn to play at the highest level. He believes Coach Fershweiler is the perfect person to help him achieve this. “I think Coach Fershweiler knows exactly how to do that, and that’s why I’m here today,” he explained.

His impact on the Western Michigan team has been immediate and substantial. “Zach’s importance to this team is is almost immeasurable and he’s a guy that leads by example every day and those are the leaders you want,” commented one team source. Wisdom consistently brings his best effort to every practice and game. “He just comes every day and and does it right,” the source added.

Coach Fershweiler sees Wisdom as the embodiment of what it means to be a Bronco hockey player. “He epitomizes what being a Bronco hockey player is all about. He plays hard, puts his body on the line. Uh you know, he plays for that logo on the front of the jersey,” the coach stated. “It’s real inspiring to see.” Wisdom’s journey, marked by overcoming adversity, has prepared him for moments like playing in the NCAA tournament. He acknowledges that he didn’t achieve this alone, often thinking of his family and those early mornings in the tow truck.

Dreams Do Come True

Looking back, Wisdom wouldn’t change a thing about his past. The struggles taught him and his brother the value of hard work and perseverance. “Nothing ever was uh given to us. It taught me and my brother how much we had to work for everything,” he said. He is incredibly proud of his mother’s sacrifices and strength. “I’m proud of my mother for everything that she’s done and she’s worked her butt off.” Wisdom’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination and family support, dreams can indeed come true.
