Webber Recalls Ali, Praises Nebraska Fans in March Madness

Chris Webber, the legendary former Michigan Fab Five star, is back in the college basketball spotlight, not just as a commentator but as a nostalgic observer of March Madness. Sitting courtside, calling games and filling out brackets, Webber shared vivid memories of past tournaments, including an unforgettable encounter with his hero, Muhammad Ali. He also offered glowing praise for the passionate Nebraska fanbase, whose dedication to their team’s first NCAA tournament win was unlike anything he’d ever witnessed.

Nebraska’s Historic Win and Fanatic Support

Webber’s eyes lit up when discussing Nebraska’s historic victory. The team, coached by Fred Hoiberg, secured their first-ever NCAA tournament win, a moment made even more special by the overwhelming support from their fans. “The fans or the team?” Webber mused when asked about the most impressive aspect. He lauded the team’s grit, a reflection of Hoiberg’s own tough playing style, and noted the personal journey of Hoiberg’s son, who went from walk-on to starter. However, it was the Nebraska faithful who truly stole the show. “I’ve never been in a first round game that was… the home site of the team that came,” Webber explained, describing a sea of red that packed the arena from early morning. “It had to be 17,000 Nebraska fans here, and it was so impressive because they partied from 6:00 a.m. yesterday till after the game.” He humorously advised the fans to get some rest before their next matchup against Vanderbilt, acknowledging their incredible energy.

March Madness Memories and Muhammad Ali’s Wisdom

The excitement of the tournament clearly brought back a flood of memories for Webber. He reminisced about the fun distractions of the road, like playing Tecmo Bowl with Jaylen Rose, where the loser had to carry the team’s bags. But the most profound memory was meeting Muhammad Ali during their NCAA tournament run. “We were so upset that we were the six seed, we got screwed,” Webber recalled, describing how Ali brought the whole team together. “He takes me in the room to the side and talks to me by myself. We build a relationship.” Ali’s words, simple yet powerful, resonated deeply. “He just says, you know, went like this, ‘Proud of you, proud of you.'” This encounter left such an impact that Webber believes it inspired the team’s mantra to “shock the world,” a direct echo of Ali’s legendary spirit.

Michigan’s Tournament Hopes and Injury Concerns

Webber also touched on his alma mater, Michigan, and their current NCAA tournament prospects. While acknowledging injuries, particularly the absence of a key player like Kase, he remains optimistic about their chances of reaching the Sweet Sixteen. “I still feel good about us getting to the Sweet 16, getting healthy,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of interior defense and the need for players to step up. Webber noted that teams are employing strong perimeter defense against Michigan, and the pick-and-roll game has been a challenge, referencing Purdue’s success. “Right now in the tournament, it’s all about guard play,” he emphasized, explaining that guards need to create their own shots and involve others. He believes Michigan can overcome their challenges with adjustments and time to practice, especially if they can get healthy.

Thoughts on Houston and Bracketology

Looking at the broader tournament picture, Webber expressed admiration for the Houston Cougars, seeing them as a strong contender. He connected with their coach’s mentality, describing a singular focus on winning and advancing through the tournament stages. “They play physical. They get up and down the floor. They’re no nonsense,” Webber said of Houston. He also mentioned his own bracket picks, revealing he has one with Houston and Michigan facing off, and another where Houston wins it all. He also shared his own bracket’s standing, placing him in the top 64%.

Webber on Bam Adebayo’s Scoring and Wizards’ Play

Shifting to the NBA, Webber didn’t hold back his thoughts on Bam Adebayo’s high-scoring game against the Washington Wizards. While congratulating Adebayo, Webber expressed disappointment in the Wizards’ lack of pride and defensive effort, calling them “terrible.” He felt the Wizards’ excessive fouling and lack of resistance were disrespectful to the game and the fans. “My concern is, you know, with the Washington Generals, why would you… It was no pride from Washington. It was almost as if they were giddy to be in the same court with a man that scored that much on them,” Webber stated, clearly frustrated. He believes that even in a blowout, teams should play with pride and compete, and he felt the Wizards fell far short of that standard, overshadowing Adebayo’s impressive performance.
