US Official Slams White House Iran War Video as ‘Disgusting’

A high-ranking US official has sharply criticized a recent social media video released by the White House concerning the escalating conflict with Iran, calling it “disgusting” and inappropriate for the nation’s highest office. The remarks came from Ambassador Wendy Sherman, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under the Biden administration, during a recent interview on Times Radio.

Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Concerns

The conflict, which has seen increasing military action and rhetoric from the Trump administration, has drawn significant concern both domestically and internationally. President Donald Trump has stated that only a complete Iranian surrender will halt US bombardment of Tehran. This hardline stance has been met with mixed reactions, particularly from members of the Iranian diaspora.

“I don’t know about a hope going forward and I have always been of the idea that war is not the answer. We tried as activists in the diaspora for years to prevent this exact situation from happening because we knew that there were diplomatic ways of weakening this regime and weakening their resources gradually but diplomatically and legally. So now we are filled with horror as to what comes next. We are filled with horror for the further death and destruction of our citizens.”

– Alika Ashuri, daughter of a former political prisoner in Iran

Conversely, some within the Iranian diaspora see the US and Israeli involvement as a necessary intervention. GO Esandiari, a board member of the think tank Lotus Advocacy, believes that Iran is already subject to foreign intervention by its own regime, not for its people. Esandiari reported that many Iranians inside the country are celebrating and express hope for liberty, thanking President Trump and Israel for their actions against the current dictatorship.

Economic and Human Costs of Conflict

Ambassador Sherman highlighted the tangible economic consequences of the ongoing conflict for Americans, noting the rise in gas and grocery prices due to disruptions in crucial shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. However, she emphasized that the human cost is far more significant.

“I think at the end of the day, the real cost of all of this is about people. those girls who will never have a future. The others who were killed in that particular attack. The Iranian people who absolutely as I heard earlier on Times radio want to celebrate, want the end of this oppressive, insidious just awful regime that slaughtered protesters in the streets.”

Sherman also expressed deep concern over reports, citing internal US military sources, that the US may be responsible for the deadliest incident of the war: an air strike that killed 165 at an Iranian girls’ school. She questioned the transactional nature of President Trump’s approach, suggesting a focus on oil or economic control over genuine support for the Iranian people’s desire for freedom.

Critique of Trump’s Foreign Policy Approach

Ambassador Sherman voiced skepticism regarding President Trump’s stated aim to install a new, US-friendly leadership in Iran. She admitted to having long ceased trying to decipher Trump’s thought process, characterizing his approach as one that enjoys projecting power. Sherman noted that while the US military is extraordinary, its use as a first resort rather than a last resort is concerning.

She also touched upon the broader geopolitical implications, including reports of Russian intelligence sharing with Iran and the complex energy dynamics involving India and Russia. The potential for China to exploit American distraction, particularly regarding Taiwan, was also raised as a significant concern.

The ‘Disgusting’ White House Video

The most pointed criticism was reserved for a White House social media video, described as a “pro-war message entitled Justice the American Way.” The video featured aggressive slogans and imagery, which Ambassador Sherman found deeply inappropriate.

“I think it’s really quite frankly disgusting. Um I think it is not anything that should come out of the White House of the United States of America. Recent polling in this country shows a fall-off in young men voting for MAGA, voting for the president. And I think this is an appeal to young men. There’s a lot of chest beating going on by Secretary Hegsth who didn’t even begin any of his press conferences talking about the lives that have been lost by American soldiers who are trying to secure America’s future. So this is a very in my view unseemly approach and not what we should be about at all.”

– Ambassador Wendy Sherman

Sherman described the video’s tone as an “unseemly approach” and a form of “chest beating,” suggesting it was an attempt to appeal to young men, particularly in light of reported declines in young male support for the president’s political movement. She contrasted this with the need to acknowledge the sacrifices of American soldiers and focus on the human cost of the conflict.

International Relations and Future Outlook

When asked about the UK’s stance, Sherman deferred to the Prime Minister’s judgment but emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and international norms. Addressing the broader question of whether the current global situation resembles World War II, Sherman expressed hope that it would not escalate further, while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the conflict and the potential for unintended consequences.

The interview concluded with a somber reflection on the ongoing crisis, with Sherman reiterating her hope for a swift and peaceful resolution, expressing skepticism about the current path being taken. The situation remains fluid, with global powers and regional actors closely watching developments and their far-reaching implications.
