UCLA’s Floor Party Ignites: BJ Doss’s Dance Magic!

The energy in Pauley Pavilion is electric, and the UCLA Bruins are putting on a show. Their floor routines, powered by the incredible choreography of BJ Doss, are turning heads and bringing a new level of artistry to college gymnastics. This isn’t just about flips and tumbles; it’s a vibrant celebration of personality, inspiration, and growth within the sport.

From Pro Dancer to Gymnastics Star Choreographer

BJ Doss didn’t start her journey in college gymnastics as a coach. She was a walk-on at the University of Washington, but an elbow injury kept her from competing much. Feeling heartbroken about not reaching her athletic potential, Doss shifted her focus to dance. Her passion and talent led her to an amazing career as a professional dancer, working with music industry giants like Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Ariana Grande.

After more than a decade of dancing and choreographing for major stars, a chance meeting changed her path again. In 2018, she met Valerie Condos Field, the legendary UCLA head coach and choreographer. Known affectionately as “Miss Val,” she had led the Bruins to seven national championships and set the standard for floor routines. Doss, who had friends who were UCLA alums in the dance world, would sometimes watch meets and was captivated by the evolving “floor party.” She saw the routines incorporating popular dance moves and knew she wanted to be a part of it.

A New Era for UCLA Gymnastics

When Miss Val announced her retirement after the 2019 season, she and Doss discussed what UCLA gymnastics needed next. This conversation eventually led Doss to become a volunteer coach and choreographer for the Bruins. She brought her extensive dance background and a fresh perspective to the team. After three seasons as a volunteer, Doss earned a full-time role under new head coach Janelle McDonald in 2023.

“I think her dance background really makes the artistry of gymnastics come forward,” said McDonald. Doss emphasizes collaboration, working closely with the athletes to make the creative process enjoyable and ensuring each routine reflects their individual personalities. “We’re just trying to continue to build impact and influence,” Doss explained. “Having a great team culture, bringing the vibes and the floor party.”

The ‘Floor Party’ Phenomenon

Under Doss’s guidance, the UCLA Bruins have become known for their electrifying floor routines. Her choreography is celebrated for its creativity and ability to connect with the audience. The team’s “floor party” atmosphere is a key part of their identity, fostering a positive environment where athletes can express themselves. “I want to make the process enjoyable,” Doss stated. “I think that’s really something that we stand out in just like showing our true selves through our gymnastics and our floor teams especially.”

The music selection is crucial, often dictating the mood and movements of the routine. Doss spends countless hours finding the perfect song for each gymnast. “Always starts with music. The music often just tells you what to do,” she shared. This dedication has paid off, with UCLA winning two individual floor championships under her direction: Jordan Childs in 2023 and Brooklyn Moors in 2025. In three of Doss’s first six seasons, the Bruins were the top-ranked team nationally on floor, and 12 routines have scored perfect 10s.

Inspiring Joy and Personality

The impact of Doss’s choreography goes beyond scores and wins. It’s about inspiring the gymnasts and the fans. “I’m just happy that BJ gets the experience of allowing her choreography that she’s always wanted to do shine in the ways that it shines,” one speaker noted. The ability for the athletes to “let loose and just showcase their personality within their routine” is what makes these performances so special. Doss finds the most joy in seeing the athletes love what they do. “The joy that they have makes me the most happy because I really just want them to love it and feel really great about themselves,” she said.

The UCLA Bruins’ floor routines are more than just athletic performances; they are a testament to the power of dance, inspiration, and a strong team culture, all brought to life by the vision of BJ Doss. This era of gymnastics, with its emphasis on artistry and personal expression, is truly something special.
