Trump Claims Major Iran Deal Progress, Cites “Almost All” Agreement
President Trump announced significant progress in talks with Iran, claiming "almost all points of agreement" and that Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons. He also discussed the deployment of ICE agents to airports and criticized the Biden administration's border policies. The President outlined key U.S. demands, including nuclear non-proliferation and regional peace.
Trump Hails ‘Very Strong Talks’ with Iran, Claims Broad Agreement
President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that the United States has made significant progress in talks with Iran, describing the discussions as “very, very strong” and claiming “almost all points of agreement.” The remarks came after Iran’s foreign ministry stated that the U.S. was not being truthful about productive conversations.
“They’re going to have to get themselves better public relations people,” Trump said, pushing back against the Iranian statement. He indicated that key figures like Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner had led the talks, which he characterized as going “perfectly.” According to the President, if Iran follows through on these discussions, it could resolve a long-standing conflict substantially.
Trump emphasized that Middle Eastern partners, with whom the U.S. has strong relationships, were kept in mind during these discussions. The talks reportedly extended into Monday evening. Both sides, he suggested, are eager to reach a deal.
Key Demands for Iran Deal Outlined
The President clarified what the U.S. is seeking from Iran in these negotiations. The primary goals include preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, reducing its missile capabilities, and fostering peace in the Middle East. Trump asserted that Iran has agreed to these terms, particularly regarding nuclear weapons and enriched uranium.
“We want to see no nuclear bomb, no nuclear weapon, not even close to it,” Trump stated. He also expressed a desire for Iran to halt enrichment activities, saying, “We want no enrichment, but we also want the enriched uranium.” He believes that a successful deal would benefit Iran’s rebuilding efforts, as well as enhance security for Israel and other Middle Eastern nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Trump suggested potential joint control with Iran, hinting at a possible form of regime change. “It’ll also be a form of a very serious form of a regime change,” he commented, noting that many current leaders in Iran have been eliminated. He expressed optimism about finding reasonable and respected individuals within Iran to lead the country forward, drawing a parallel to the situation in Venezuela.
ICE Deployment and Airport Mask Policy
In a separate segment of his remarks, President Trump addressed the deployment of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents to American airports. He stated that he had requested agents remove their masks at airports, believing it was not an appropriate look for individuals entering or leaving the country, especially when contrasted with the need for masks when hunting criminals.
“The people coming into the airport typically speaking aren’t murderers, killers, drug dealers, etc.,” Trump explained. He contrasted this with the presence of what he termed “murderous criminals” allegedly allowed into the country under the Biden administration. He praised ICE agents for their work in apprehending illegal immigrants.
The President also touched upon the issue of border security, criticizing the Biden administration’s policies. He stated that his administration was working to remove illegal immigrants by the tens of thousands, attributing the current situation to what he called an “open door policy” that has “hurt our country very badly.”
Iran’s Military Capabilities and U.S. Response
President Trump detailed the extensive military actions taken against Iran, stating that the U.S. had “wiped out the leadership phase one, phase two, and largely phase three.” He also mentioned destroying Iran’s Navy, Air Force, radar systems, and anti-aircraft capabilities, which he believes explains the current lack of communication from Iran.
He reiterated the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions, claiming that without U.S. intervention, Iran would have possessed a nuclear weapon within weeks. “If we didn’t hit them with the B2 bombers, they would have had a nuclear weapon within two weeks to a month,” he asserted. He added that the U.S. had recently ordered 22 more B2 bombers, highlighting their effectiveness.
When asked about similarities between potential strikes on Iranian power plants and Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Trump differentiated the situations. He emphasized Iran’s history of supporting terrorism and its alleged intent to use nuclear weapons against Israel and the Middle East. “You’re talking about a country that has been evil for 47 years,” he declared.
Focus on Domestic Policy and Political Opposition
The President also used the press conference to criticize the Democratic Party, accusing them of inflaming global situations and promoting policies that he believes are harmful to the country. He specifically mentioned opposition to voter ID, proof of citizenship, and mail-in ballots, which he characterized as corrupt. He also voiced strong opposition to what he called “transgender brutalization of our children” and “men in women’s sports.”
He touched on the idea of Elon Musk potentially helping TSA workers during a DHS shutdown, expressing openness to such support. Trump also mentioned his administration’s efforts to combat crime, referencing a task force in Memphis where overall crime was reportedly down significantly.
Finally, Trump addressed a comment made by Joe Kent, a former candidate who had stated Iran was not an imminent threat. Trump described Kent as someone he had offered a White House job to out of sympathy after Kent’s wife’s death and his repeated losses in congressional races. Trump expressed disappointment in Kent’s subsequent public statements, suggesting they were made for publicity, and alluded to potential investigations into Kent for leaking information.
