Toddler Critically Hurt After Gun Accidentally Discharged in Houston

HOUSTON – A two-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head by a firearm left unsecured in a Houston home. The incident occurred around 12:14 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Haly in the Channel View area. Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call reporting a child had been shot.

Details of the Incident

Upon arrival, deputies found the young child with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical services were called and transported the child to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently in the ICU. Preliminary reports suggest that a four-year-old child may have been holding the firearm when the shooting occurred.

According to Major Ben Katrib of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, several adults were present at the residence, with some living there and others visiting. While the two children, a two-year-old and a four-year-old, were inside a bedroom, a firearm had been left accessible to them. The adults, reportedly in the living room, heard a gunshot and discovered the injured two-year-old.

“The preliminary information is indicating that the 4-year-old was holding the firearm when the adults arrived to check. We don’t know if the 2-year-old had the firearm, had dropped it, and the 4-year-old picked it up. We don’t know if the 4-year-old shot the child. These are all things that we have to unfold as the investigation evolves.”

Sheriff’s officials confirmed that the firearm has been secured and the gun owner is cooperating with the investigation. Detectives from the Crimes Against Children unit and crime scene investigators are working to process the scene and gather more information.

Investigation Underway

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events. While initial reports suggest the four-year-old was holding the gun when adults checked on the children, investigators are not ruling out other possibilities. It is unclear if the two-year-old had the firearm before the four-year-old, or if the four-year-old picked it up.

Deputies have stated that the shooting happened very close to the time the 911 call was made, indicating it was not an incident that occurred much earlier. The exact location of the firearm within the home is still being determined, as investigators work to identify who lives at the residence and who were visitors.

At this time, there is no indication that an adult was holding the weapon when it was fired. The gun is believed to have been fired only once, though this could change as the investigation progresses. The two children involved are boys.

A Stark Reminder on Firearm Safety

Major Katrib emphasized the critical importance of securing firearms, especially in homes with children. “It’s always important to secure the firearm for for anyone who’s thinking about buying a firearm that do not have one. If you do have children or children might visit your home, they’re spontaneous, they’re curious,” he stated.

He added a strong message for gun owners: “If you do not have enough money to buy a safe or anything to secure the handgun in or any firearm, then you should not buy it. Always make room to buy a safe or something that you can secure a firearm in because pretty much we hear it all the time from the many scenes that we unfortunately have to make where everybody says the same thing. We we never thought it’ll happen to us but we hear it happening to anybody, you know. So, it could happen to anybody. We have to protect the children and that this message couldn’t, you know, be more clear.”

Next Steps and Broader Implications

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Children’s Assessment Center and Child Protective Services (CPS) as part of a multidisciplinary approach to the investigation. Once all facts are gathered, the case will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and the Crimes Against Children Bureau for review regarding potential charges.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unsecured firearms. The unpredictability of children and the potential for accidents underscore the responsibility of gun owners to ensure their weapons are stored safely and inaccessible to minors. The community awaits further updates as the investigation unfolds, hoping for a full recovery for the young victim and a thorough examination of the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking event.
