Taylor’s Bold Promise: ‘Can’t Turn Heads No More!’
The DC Defenders are gearing up for another UFL season, and they’ve added a new force to their defense: Gabriel Taylor. The younger brother of Washington football legend Sean Taylor, Gabriel is ready to make his own mark. He spoke to SportsCenter while literally on the team bus, just arriving in St. Louis for their upcoming game.
Building on a Championship Culture
Taylor is joining a DC team that knows how to win, being the defending champs. He sees the team’s success coming from a strong culture and a deep sense of brotherhood. “We play for one another,” Taylor explained. “It’s not a one-on-one fight over here. We always got each other’s back and we’re just a winning team.” This focus on unity seems to be a key ingredient for the Defenders’ winning ways.
From Safety to Cornerback: Versatility is Key
In college at Rice, Taylor was a standout safety, racking up 10 interceptions and 239 tackles. Now, he’s making a switch to cornerback in the UFL. He sees this as an opportunity to show off his full range of skills. “Coach Blake’s defense lets me play around everywhere,” Taylor said. “I can play in the box, free safety, and oppose deep half, nickel, blitzing, so I can just showcase all my skill talents.” This versatility means he can fit into many different defensive schemes, making him a valuable asset.
Lessons from Camp and a Family Legacy
Taylor previously attended training camp with the Commanders last summer. He learned valuable lessons from the experience, even though it was brief. “To make the most of the opportunity,” he noted about his time there. Now, he has another chance to prove himself. “This time I don’t give no choice to, you know, they can’t turn their heads no more.” This determined attitude shows his drive to succeed.
The legacy of his older brother, Sean Taylor, is a constant inspiration. Though Gabriel was only six when he lost his brother, Sean’s impact is undeniable. “It’s definitely a big impact,” Gabriel stated. “I can’t do nothing without his name bringing up.” He feels the pressure but uses it positively. “Whenever my name comes up, you know, people be like, ‘Oh, your little brother.’ But it’s a good thing. It makes sure that I’m on my Ps and that I bring my A-game every single time.” He’s aware that any mistake could be compared to his brother’s greatness, pushing him to perform at his best.
Wearing Number 21: A Meaningful Choice
Sean Taylor famously wore number 21 for Washington. Now, Gabriel is proudly wearing that same number for the DC Defenders. “It’s everything,” he shared. “Doing it in front of DC fans and having 21, especially Taylor on top of the name. It’s a different meaning to it.” He feels a deep connection to the number and the city. “I’m not going to let them down. I’m going to come to every game trying to make something straight.” This choice shows his respect for his brother’s legacy and his commitment to the team.
Ambition and Immediate Goals
Taylor’s ambition is clear. When asked about his dreams, he focused on the present. “Right now, I’m just going to be on my feet. So my dream is to get one and oh today.” This mindset of taking things one game at a time is crucial for any athlete. He’s focused on immediate success and building from there.
Ready for the Fans and the Beer Snakes
He also touched on the famous DC Defenders fanbase and their unique tradition of building beer snakes. “I never see it in person, so I’m excited to see it in person,” Taylor said. He’s looking forward to the home opener on April 11th and expects the fans to pack the stadium. “I know the fans going to show out. Make sure it’s sold out.” He’s eager to experience the energy firsthand.
Looking Ahead
Gabriel Taylor’s arrival brings a mix of family legacy, determined attitude, and versatile talent to the DC Defenders. His commitment to playing for his teammates and honoring his brother’s memory, all while aiming for immediate success, sets a strong tone for the season. With his sights set on making a significant impact, Taylor is ready to prove he’s more than just a name; he’s a player ready to compete at the highest level.
