Supergirl Trailer Wins Over Skeptic: Is DC’s New Hero a Hit?
The second trailer for DC's Supergirl movie has successfully won over a key skeptic. Heavy Spoilers host Paul, initially unimpressed, now calls the trailer stunning and admits it has made him genuinely interested in the film.
Supergirl Trailer Wins Over Skeptic: Is DC’s New Hero a Hit?
The second trailer for DC’s upcoming Supergirl movie has managed to win over at least one major critic: host Paul from the Heavy Spoilers Show. Initially lukewarm on the first trailer, Paul admits this new look at the film has significantly shifted his perspective, making him genuinely interested in seeing the movie. He explains that while he’s a big DC fan, he hasn’t always loved every recent DC movie, finding himself in the middle ground regarding the franchise’s direction.
From Doubt to Delight
Paul confessed he almost skipped covering the first Supergirl trailer. He prefers to talk about things he knows well, avoiding the trap of just repeating information found online. He felt the initial trailer looked too much like a copy of the popular ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ style, a trend he believes is already overdone in the DC Universe. This feeling left him “tepid” and uninterested.
However, this new trailer changed everything. Paul stated, “I think they did a really good job there.” He highlighted that the main trailer, unlike a teaser, needs to truly sell the movie. Despite some initial worries, particularly about a flat-looking shot of Superman, he found the rest of the visuals stunning.
Visuals Shine, Story Hooks
“Visually, it looks great,” Paul exclaimed. He praised the step up in visual quality, noting that the shots really “pop off the screen.” This was a significant concern for him, especially with other recent space-themed movies setting a high bar. He specifically called out a powerful shot of Supergirl leaving Krypton as it explodes, imagining it being caused by Brainiac’s domes closing in. This visual, combined with the emotional weight of seeing Krypton’s destruction, made him understand the character’s potential pain and struggle.
While Paul admitted he isn’t particularly invested in the villain, the trailer still managed to pull him in. He mentioned hearing from test screenings that the villain is the weakest part of the film. He also noted that the plot seems to follow a familiar “escort mission” type of story, where a jaded hero learns to embrace goodness again through a younger character. He described it as a tale seen thousands of times before but acknowledged that it works for a reason.
A Star is Born?
A major highlight for Paul was the performance of Millie Alcock as Supergirl. He called her a “standout actress” from ‘House of the Dragon’ and is excited to see her “big break into movies.” He praised her range, noting her ability to portray both fun and stoic characters, and someone carrying the “weight of the world on her shoulders.”
Paul also touched on Jason Momoa’s expected appearance as Lobo, believing Momoa is excellent at playing himself and brings humor and intimidation to his roles, citing his work in ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Fast and Furious’ as examples.
Winning Over the Doubter
Despite his initial reservations, Paul concluded that the trailer succeeded in its goal. “It’s definitely, I think, a good trailer in terms of getting people like myself who are maybe on the fence about the movie or maybe disinterested in it to being like, you know what, I’m going to take a second look at this.” He felt the trailer “melted his cold heart” and expressed hope that the movie itself would explore themes of regaining hope and finding goodness.
The Supergirl movie is the second film in the new DCU, following ‘Superman’. While specific release dates and box office predictions are still developing, this trailer has clearly generated renewed interest, particularly from fans who, like Paul, were waiting to be convinced.
