The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 94-68 in a dominant Sweet Sixteen performance. South Carolina Dominates Oklahoma 94-68 in Sweet 16
The South Carolina Gamecocks are heading to the Elite Eight once again. They showed why they are a top team by beating the Oklahoma Sooners with a convincing 94-68 victory in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. This win sends South Carolina to their 10th Elite Eight appearance in program history.
Gamecocks’ Strong Start Sets the Tone
From the opening tip, South Carolina made it clear they were here to play. Taniah Latson was on fire early, scoring 8 of South Carolina’s first 10 points. She finished the game with a strong performance, showing the scoring ability that made her the nation’s leading scorer last year. Her confident play set the tone for the Gamecocks.
Oklahoma struggled to find their rhythm early on. While freshman Aaliyah Chavez showed flashes of brilliance, scoring 15 points in an overtime game previously and looking fearless in her first Sweet 16, the Sooners couldn’t match South Carolina’s intensity. Oklahoma’s offense, which often relies on three-pointers, found it tough to get going against the Gamecocks’ defense.
South Carolina’s Balanced Attack Shines
What made South Carolina so tough to beat was their balanced scoring. While Latson led the charge, other players stepped up throughout the game. Raven Johnson played with a different level of confidence, contributing on both ends of the floor. Tessa Johnson also got hot in the second half, hitting back-to-back buckets and showing her ability to score when needed.
The Gamecocks also showed great teamwork and execution. They moved the ball well, with players like Joyce Edwards making smart passes, including a beautiful touch pass to Alicia Tornabes. South Carolina’s quarter-court execution was terrific, and they were patient in working the clock to get good shots. This deliberate approach is something coach Don Staley wants to see her team continue to improve on.
Oklahoma’s Efforts Fall Short
Despite the score, Oklahoma showed fight. Reagan Beers worked hard, scoring 11 points in the third quarter and having to create her own opportunities. Aaliyah Chavez continued to show her potential as a freshman, hitting tough shots even as her team fell behind. However, South Carolina’s defense was consistently strong, and Oklahoma couldn’t capitalize on South Carolina’s missed opportunities.
Coach Jenny Baranik of Oklahoma noted a lack of urgency from her team in practice leading up to the game. While players like Beers and Chavez gave their all, the team as a whole couldn’t overcome South Carolina’s dominance. The Gamecocks’ defense was a major factor, limiting Oklahoma’s scoring chances throughout the contest.
Looking Ahead: Elite Eight Bound
With this victory, South Carolina moves on to the Elite Eight, continuing their impressive tournament run. Their experience and execution showed why they are a perennial contender under coach Don Staley, who is seeking her 50th NCAA tournament win. The Gamecocks’ ability to score from different players and their strong defense make them a formidable opponent.
For Oklahoma, the season ends in the Sweet 16. While they have a promising young core, they will look to build on this experience for next season. The loss highlights the challenge of reaching the Elite Eight in such a competitive tournament.
“That’s a Taniah Latson. I know. I mean, if she do that every night, I don’t see nobody stopping us. I think she just got to get comfortable in her skin. I know this is her first Sweet 16. I’m glad she got in her groove today.”
Raven Johnson also spoke about her own performance, crediting God and her hard work in the offseason for her confidence and success in NCAA games. She also playfully suggested that Coach Staley’s decision to wear her shirt might have been a sign of good luck.
