SGA Drops 40, OKC Clinches Playoffs!
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put on a show, scoring 40 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a thrilling 120-101 victory over the Orlando Magic. This huge win also secured the Thunder’s third straight playoff appearance. It was a performance for the ages, as SGA became the first Thunder player to score 40 points on the same day the team clinched a playoff spot since Russell Westbrook’s epic 57-point game in 2017. The MVP buzz around SGA is growing louder with every dominant outing.
SGA’s Masterclass
The game was tight early, with the Thunder trailing by five early in the third quarter. But SGA was having none of it. He hit a crucial three-pointer to cut the lead to two. Later, down by two again, he unleashed his signature step-back jumper to tie the game at 62. Even when the Magic went up by five, SGA drove fearlessly into traffic, finishing with his left hand amongst the trees. With under two and a half minutes left in the third, he willed himself to the basket for a dunk, tying the game at 77.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter. Down by one, KJ Martin hit a clutch lefty shot, and then SGA took over. He drove past a tough defender, Benro, and finished with a beautiful layup. Later, with three minutes left and OKC up three, SGA again drove into traffic, finishing with a smooth layup over multiple defenders. His performance was capped off with 40 points, five rebounds, and four steals. The Magic fought hard, but SGA’s brilliance was too much.
MVP Conversations Heat Up
Monica McNutt was highly impressed, calling SGA’s performance “dominant” and “efficient.” She declared, “That’s your MVP.” McNutt highlighted his consistent scoring streak of 129 games with at least 20 points, his impact on both offense and defense, and his poise. “He’s the best player on the best team and is the best player in the league,” she stated, emphasizing that SGA checks all the boxes for an MVP candidate, especially when facing tough opponents on the road.
Sean Terrant echoed the sentiment, noting that while other stars like Nikola Jokic and Jaylen Brown deserve credit, SGA’s mentality is unmatched. “There’s no let up with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. That’s what makes him so special,” Terrant said. He pointed out that the Thunder have overcome significant injuries to key players like Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, yet SGA continues to lead the team. A remarkable stat showed SGA as the first player in NBA history with 800 points, 55% field goal shooting, and 45% three-point shooting over a 25-game road span.
Wemby’s Otherworldly Talent
The discussion also touched on Victor Wembanyama, the rising star for the San Antonio Spurs. In their game against the Sacramento Kings, Wembanyama showcased his incredible skillset. He made stunning passes, including a no-look lefty scoop shot that left viewers in awe. He also hit a deep three-pointer from 27 feet out, part of a record-breaking night for the Spurs. San Antonio hit 25 three-pointers, a franchise record, in their blowout win against the Kings.
While SGA dominates offensively, Wembanyama is equally dominant defensively. “He’s as feared as anyone in the NBA,” McNutt noted. She explained that teams have to adjust their strategies because of his defensive presence. Terrant added that the “Wemby experience” is hard to describe, running out of superlatives. He raised questions about how teams will play him physically in the postseason and if he can avoid foul trouble in a playoff series.
Spurs and Thunder on Similar Paths
The conversation drew parallels between the current Spurs, with Wembanyama leading the charge, and the Thunder two years ago. Both teams are building around a young, generational talent. The Spurs’ impressive 19-2 record since February and their franchise-record three-pointers highlight their rapid improvement. The Thunder’s success, despite injuries, shows the depth of their roster and the impact of SGA’s leadership.
Injury Updates
The segment also included injury updates. Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise, expected to miss one to two weeks. Anthony Edwards is also out for one to two weeks with soreness and inflammation, though concern is low. The Minnesota Timberwolves, currently the sixth seed, are hoping to avoid falling into the play-in tournament during Edwards’ absence.
