Senator Van Hollen Criticizes ‘Immoral’ Trump Administration’s Iran War Rationale

Washington D.C. – As tensions escalate in the Middle East, Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has sharply criticized the Trump administration’s justification for military action against Iran. Speaking on national television, Van Hollen accused the White House of shifting its rationale for the conflict, fabricating reasons as it progresses, and acting in an ‘immoral’ manner that disregards constitutional war powers and American lives.

Shifting Justifications and Echoes of Iraq War

Senator Van Hollen drew stark parallels between the current situation and the lead-up to the Iraq War in 2003. He highlighted comments from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who likened current operations to ‘Operation Epic Fury,’ delivering ‘twice the air power of shock and awe of Iraq in 2003, minus Paul Bremer and the nation building.’ Van Hollen dismissed this comparison, stating, ‘This is not a mission accomplished situation. This is simply a reality check.’

He argued that the administration is ‘constantly shifting its rationale for launching this war against Iran,’ suggesting they are ‘making it up as it goes.’ Van Hollen recalled Donald Trump’s campaign promise to avoid foreign wars, contrasting it with the current trajectory. ‘Just like the Iraq war, at the beginning of that war, the administration, the Bush administration was predicting wonderful and quick things as well,’ he noted, implying a pattern of optimistic but potentially misleading initial assessments.

Questioning the ‘Why’ and the Cost

The core of Senator Van Hollen’s critique centers on the lack of clear objectives and the mounting costs of the conflict. While acknowledging the United States military’s capability to defeat Iran’s forces, he posed critical questions: ‘THE ISSUE IS WHY, AT WHAT COST, AT WHAT RISK TO AMERICANS, INCLUDING ALREADY HAVING LOST SIX BRAVE AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYER, ALREADY $5 billion dollars. And for what? And they really cannot tell us for what.’

Van Hollen asserted that the administration’s claims regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities are unfounded. ‘We know that they don’t have a nuclear weapons program. Anyone who says that they had a capacity is lying,’ he stated. He further countered the narrative on ballistic missile threats, saying, ‘Their ballistic missiles are nowhere near capable of hitting the United States.’ Regarding regime change, he warned that ‘they’re opening up Pandora’s box,’ questioning the wisdom of risking American lives and taxpayer money for an outcome with unknown consequences.

Defending Constitutional War Powers

Responding to accusations that critics of the war are ‘rooting against the country,’ Senator Van Hollen vehemently disagreed. ‘We’re rooting for the country. We’re rooting for the American servicemen and women who sign up to defend the Constitution of the United States, not to allow a president on his own to just go out and start a war,’ he declared.

He emphasized the founders’ intent behind granting Congress the power to declare war. ‘That’s why our Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war because the framers were very worried about exactly what we’re seeing right now,’ Van Hollen explained. He directly attacked President Trump’s approach, stating, ‘One person decided that the only constraints on him, as he says, are his own morality and his own sense of reason. Well, this president is an immoral president.’ He concluded this point by asserting, ‘We are standing up for the United States and the CONSTITUTION, WHILE UNFORTUNATELY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS SHREDDING IT AND GETTING AMERICA IN A MUCH MORE DANGEROUS PLACE.’

Contradictions and Israeli Influence

The interview also delved into the apparent contradictions within the administration’s statements. Van Hollen pointed to a specific instance where Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared to be directly contradicted by President Trump, and then contradicted himself. A clip was played where Pompeo stated, ‘WE KNEW THAT THERE WAS GOING TO BE AN ISRAELI ACTION, WE KNEW THAT THAT WOULD PRECIPITATE AN ATTACK AGAINST AMERICAN FORCES AND WE KNEW IF WE DIDN’T PRE-EMPTIVELY GO AFTER them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties and perhaps even higher those killed.’ When asked if Israel forced the U.S. hand, Pompeo appeared to backtrack, saying, ‘No, I told you this had to happen anyway.’

Senator Van Hollen expressed frustration with the lack of clarity. ‘Americans should believe… which account should Americans believe? And a no. And this is just the example of the administration flipping and flopping, literally making things up as they go,’ he said. He reiterated the principle that ‘You shouldn’t launch a war without having a clear idea of what the goal is.’

He further implicated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that Netanyahu had found a willing partner in President Trump. ‘Now we know that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu just said the the other day he’s been waiting 40 years for this to HAPPEN, THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. AND IT LOOKS LIKE HE FINALLY FOUND AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT WHO WAS RECKLESS ENOUGH AND STUPID ENOUGH TO DRAG AMERICA INTO THIS WAR,’ Van Hollen stated.

Looking Ahead: War Powers Resolution Vote

The segment concluded with a reminder that the Senate was expected to vote on a War Powers Resolution regarding the conflict. Senator Van Hollen’s sharp critique underscores the growing congressional opposition and the profound questions surrounding the Trump administration’s foreign policy decisions and their constitutional basis.
