Senator Criticizes President Trump’s Decision-Making on Iran

Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy, particularly concerning Iran and the ongoing government shutdown. Speaking on a news program, Van Hollen voiced serious concerns about the information President Trump receives for critical decisions. He described the president as “delusional,” suggesting Trump relies on short, simplified videos rather than comprehensive intelligence briefings from U.S. agencies.

Van Hollen pointed to intelligence warnings that removing top Iranian leaders could result in a more radical group taking power. He also noted that intelligence agencies had indicated Iran was not close to developing nuclear weapons. Instead of heeding these warnings, Van Hollen stated, Trump is surrounded by advisors who tell him what he wants to hear, making the country less safe.

The senator highlighted the significant costs associated with the escalating tensions. He mentioned 13 service members killed and hundreds wounded, alongside billions of dollars spent daily. Rising oil and gas prices are also a direct consequence, according to Van Hollen. He attributed this “really bad decision” to President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Questions on Trump’s Peace Proposal to Iran

While Democrats advocate for an end to the conflict, President Trump has claimed to have sent a peace proposal to Iran. Despite Iran reportedly rejecting it, Van Hollen questioned whether this was a step in the right direction. He reiterated his view of a “delusional president,” noting that Trump’s claim of direct communication with Iran was untrue. Instead, messages are being relayed through intermediaries like Pakistan and Turkey.

Van Hollen dismissed Trump’s assertions that Iran is eager to make a deal and will concede everything. He stated this is “flatly untrue,” as Iran has rejected the proposal. He criticized Trump for telling the country the conflict is ending on his terms, calling it “another lie.” Van Hollen recalled Trump’s campaign promise not to drag the U.S. into another war, especially in the Middle East, as the “big lie.”

Senator Addresses Department of Homeland Security Funding Standoff

Turning to domestic issues, Van Hollen discussed the standoff over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has led to a partial government shutdown. He referenced President Trump’s statement that he would be unhappy with any deal made, indicating a lack of willingness to compromise.

Van Hollen proposed a straightforward solution: immediately reopen and fully fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and ensure TSA agents are paid. He called it “insane” to use Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at airports when the clear solution is to fund TSA. He also stressed the need to fund FEMA and the Coast Guard. These actions, he argued, should happen while negotiations continue on reforms for ICE, which he described as a “lawless operation” the Trump administration doesn’t seem serious about changing.

Impacts of the Shutdown on Air Travel

The senator detailed the severe consequences of the shutdown, citing long wait times at airports like Baltimore-Washington International. On a recent Sunday, nearly 40% of TSA agents called out, leading to significant disruptions. Van Hollen shared that people are constantly telling him their flights have been canceled or missed due to long lines.

Van Hollen firmly stated that Congress should not go on recess until this issue is resolved. He believes a solution is achievable immediately if Republicans and President Trump agree to fund TSA and other essential agencies. This funding, he emphasized, can be secured today, allowing negotiations on reforms to proceed afterward.

Concerns Over ICE Funding and Accountability

Van Hollen expressed strong opposition to allocating more funds to ICE. He pointed out that Republicans have already provided substantial funding in their previous bills. He argued against giving ICE “another penny” until the administration demonstrates seriousness about reining in the agency’s operations.

He specifically raised concerns about accountability, noting the lack of a system to hold ICE officials responsible when they harm American citizens. Van Hollen cited recent events in Minneapolis, where individuals are reportedly suing the FBI to obtain information for a credible investigation into killings by ICE agents. He believes the Trump administration is actively avoiding such accountability.

Call for Immediate TSA Funding

With the deadline for a potential deal looming before a two-week congressional recess, Van Hollen urged lawmakers to prioritize funding TSA. He expressed hope that Republican senators would listen to their constituents and support this immediate measure. “It really is as simple as that,” he said, urging them to fund TSA now.

Van Hollen concluded by stating that Congress should not leave town until the TSA funding issue is resolved. He reiterated his belief that this can be accomplished immediately, emphasizing the urgency of the situation for both national security and the well-being of American travelers and workers.
