Senator Slams GOP for Holding TSA Hostage in Shutdown Fight

Senator Gary Peters, the top Democrat on the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, is expressing outrage over the ongoing government shutdown, accusing Republicans of using the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as a “hostage” to achieve their policy goals. The shutdown has left thousands of TSA workers without pay, impacting their ability to cover basic living expenses like mortgages and car payments.

TSA Workers Unpaid Amid Shutdown Chaos

Speaking out against the shutdown’s impact, Senator Peters highlighted the plight of TSA employees who are working without a paycheck. He described the situation as “outrageous” and emphasized the urgent need to end the shutdown and ensure these essential workers receive their paychecks. “We need to end it. We need to make sure that they’re getting their paychecks and we’re opening it up,” Peters stated.

To address the immediate crisis, Senator Peters announced his intention to bring a bill to the Senate floor for a unanimous consent request. This process would allow for a quick vote to pay TSA workers while broader negotiations continue. However, Peters anticipates Republican objection, which would block the bill. “The only problem is Republicans can object and I expect the Republicans are going to object,” he explained.

Disagreement Over ICE vs. TSA Funding

The core of the legislative standoff, according to Senator Peters, lies in the Republican desire to link TSA funding to unrelated issues, particularly concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While acknowledging that there are legitimate concerns and debates surrounding ICE, Peters stressed that these issues should not be conflated with the immediate need to pay TSA employees. “Although we have issues with ICE that we’re trying to work out and there is no quarrel about TSA or FEMA or CISA but TSA right now there there’s no quarrel,” Peters said.

He added, “All my Republican friends say let’s open up TSA. I’m saying well, you control the floor. You can put that bill on the floor today and we can vote on it or when I ask for unanimous consent, don’t object to it. And we can send that bill off to the House and get this fixed.” This suggests a clear path to resolution for TSA funding, which Republicans are reportedly blocking.

Republicans Accused of Using TSA as Leverage

“And yet Republicans are unwilling. And the only reason I think is because they want to use TSA as hostage, so that they don’t put in some common-sense guardrails with federal agents, guardrails that we basically have in effect right now for all of our local police. But they’re unwilling to do that. And they will ━ they are basically using TSA as a hostage. That’s unacceptable.”

Senator Peters directly accused Republicans of using TSA workers as leverage. He believes they are demanding certain policy changes, specifically regarding federal agent accountability, which he described as “common-sense guardrails” already in place for local police. By withholding TSA pay, Republicans are attempting to force Democrats to agree to these demands. “They are basically using TSA as a hostage. That’s unacceptable,” Peters declared.

President Trump’s Role and Threats

The conversation also touched upon President Trump’s stance and his recent statements. The President has been critical of Democrats, blaming them for the shutdown and warning of “very drastic measures” if the shutdown is not ended. Peters suggested that President Trump could easily resolve the TSA funding issue with a simple phone call to Senate Republicans. “He could just call that Republican who is going to object on the floor today and say don’t object. Let’s move forward and make sure TSA, folks get paid and resources go there,” Peters proposed.

However, Peters expressed skepticism about the President’s willingness to take such a step, noting Trump’s tendency to make threats. “He’s unwilling to do that and who knows what’s going on in his mind right now. He makes all sorts of threats, and that’s just the way he operates,” the Senator commented.

Path Forward and Next Steps

Senator Peters reiterated his commitment to continue fighting for TSA workers, planning to passionately advocate for their pay on the Senate floor. He believes a resolution is possible if Republicans cease their objections. “I’m going to try it again. I’m going to get down there again. I’m going to talk as passionately as I can that these folks need to get paid, and we need to get on with the business of making sure folks can get on their airplanes in a timely fashion and it can happen as long as a Republican does not object,” he concluded.

The situation remains tense, with the immediate future of TSA worker pay dependent on the actions of Senate Republicans and potentially President Trump. Senator Peters’ efforts highlight the human cost of political gridlock and the urgent need for compromise to ensure essential government services continue without disruption.
