Senator Andy Kim Urges Congressional Action Amidst U.S. Strikes on Iran

New Jersey Democratic Senator Andy Kim has issued a strong call for Congress to reconvene immediately to vote on a War Powers Resolution, asserting that recent U.S. military actions against Iran were “appalling” and conducted against the will of the American people. Speaking on the unfolding events, Senator Kim expressed deep concern over President Trump’s unilateral decision to launch strikes, which he believes bypasses constitutional authority and ignores public sentiment.

Concerns Over Unilateral Military Action and Constitutional Authority

Senator Kim, who has prior experience working on Middle East issues at the Pentagon and served in Afghanistan, drew parallels to past conflicts, warning of the potential for protracted, open-ended engagements without clear strategy or public consensus. “I’ve seen with my own eyes the problems that arise and the tragedy that ensues when our country goes into war,” Kim stated, referencing his experiences. He criticized the notion of a “war without strategy” and voiced fears of a repeat of the costly and consequential 2003 Iraq War.

During a town hall, Kim reported that no attendees raised hands when asked if they supported U.S. military action against Iran, but every hand was raised when asked if the American people’s voice should be heard. “The President is so far out of touch with the American people,” he remarked, expressing worry that service members would bear the brunt of such decisions.

“This is something that we need to stand up against, and I believe that we need to have Congress reassemble as soon as possible this weekend to be able to vote on the War Powers Resolution, to show that this is not something that the American people want.”

Questioning the Imminent Threat Justification

Addressing President Trump’s justification of an “imminent threat,” Senator Kim, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, stated there had been no notification of such a threat to his committee. He questioned the President’s shifting narrative, recalling that Trump had previously declared the Iranian threat “obliterated.” Kim also criticized the diplomatic efforts preceding the strikes, describing them as a “handful of talks” by a limited team, insufficient for such significant military action.

“If there was such an imminent threat, why didn’t we engage in further diplomatic efforts beyond what we saw right now?” Kim questioned. He emphasized that this was not merely a procedural concern about branches of government but a fundamental issue of acting against the will of the American people.

Debate on Congressional Support and War Powers

When asked about the potential for passing a War Powers Resolution in a Republican-controlled Congress, Senator Kim acknowledged the political challenges but stressed the importance of making a public record. He argued that the American people deserve to know where their representatives stand on what he termed an “illegal, unconstitutional war.” Kim highlighted that Americans are currently focused on domestic concerns like affordability and community well-being, not on what he described as the President’s “imperialist” assertions.

Addressing the Iranian Threat and Regime Change

Senator Kim acknowledged the seriousness of Iran’s threat as a state sponsor of terror, stating, “I worked for years trying to counter Iranian terror in the region. So I know this firsthand.” However, he maintained that this designation does not grant the President unilateral authority for large-scale military action without congressional approval, drawing parallels to post-9/11 authorizations and the designation of North Korea as a state sponsor of terror.

Regarding the President’s stated goal of regime change, Senator Kim explicitly stated he does not support the President’s unilateral efforts. Citing his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, he warned that U.S.-imposed regime change can lead to backlash and unintended consequences, potentially empowering more dangerous factions. “I see no way in which this President has thought through how we exit this, this type of war that he has started,” Kim concluded.

Call for Accountability and Public Voice

Senator Kim reiterated his plea for Congress to convene, emphasizing that the President needs to hear from Americans. He expressed concern that past and present White House administrations have exhibited hubris in attempting to dictate global situations, often at the expense of American service members. “Without Congress engaged in this, I believe that we are abdicating our responsibility,” he stated, urging immediate action to incorporate the voice of the American people into the decision-making process.

Concluding his remarks, Kim stated that while it might be too late to prevent the initial actions, he would work diligently to protect service members and the American people, drawing on his career experience. He described the situation as unleashing “Pandora’s Box,” with potentially irreversible consequences, and stressed the need for a unified national approach grounded in strategy and public support.
