Schiff Slams GOP for TSA Shutdown, Demands ICE Reform
Senator Adam Schiff lambasted Senate Republicans for withholding TSA and FEMA funding, accusing them of using essential services as leverage to secure more money for ICE and Border Patrol. Schiff demanded reforms to border agencies, citing alleged abuses and excessive force, before agreeing to increased appropriations.
Sen. Schiff Condemns Republican Stance on TSA Funding, Cites Border Agency Concerns
California Senator Adam Schiff has sharply criticized Senate Republicans for their refusal to fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), directly linking the ongoing government shutdown of these essential services to demands for increased funding and reduced oversight for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol.
Speaking from a Senate floor discussion, Schiff highlighted the immediate impact on the traveling public, stating, “If you’re headed to an airport this weekend, as I am, we are going to face very long TSA lines because once again today, Republicans refuse to vote for funding the TSA. TSA agents are not getting paid now because their budget is not active.” He accused Republicans of attaching “conditions to fully funding the TSA, which include unprecedented increases in funding for Donald Trump’s domestic invasion forces of ICE and Border Patrol agents.”
Demands for Accountability and Reform
Senator Schiff articulated the core of the Democratic opposition, emphasizing the need for reforms within ICE and Border Patrol before agreeing to further appropriations. “We’re seeing families torn apart, citizens detained without medical care, fathers and mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, children detained because of the color of their skin or the language they speak or where they work,” Schiff stated, painting a stark picture of alleged abuses. He further pointed to significant spending on armaments, noting, “We see DHS spending $140 million on assault weapons, glocks and tasers and countless more on building massive new detention centers.”
“We are insisting on reform. We reject the false choice the majority would give us that we cannot reform ICE until we agree to give ICE billions more. These cannot be the only two choices.” – Sen. Adam Schiff
Schiff’s proposed reforms include holding ICE and Border Patrol agents to the same standards as local police officers, specifically demanding the removal of policies that allow for searches and detentions without judicial warrants. “Until their standard of no judicial warrant, no problem is torn out of the training manual. That’s not too much to ask,” he asserted. He also called for independent investigations into instances of excessive force, a stark contrast to the current practices he described as “storming city apartment buildings like they were behind enemy lines or ice dragging citizens from their homes or CBP gunning down Americans in cold blood in the street.”
Legislative Impasse and Public Suffering
The current legislative standoff, according to Schiff, is a deliberate tactic by Republicans to “hold TSA hostage to ICE.” He explained the standard legislative process would allow for the immediate funding of TSA, which enjoys broad bipartisan support, while separate negotiations continue on border security and immigration enforcement. “Basically the Republicans and Democrats agree on funding for TSA if it was a stand-alone bill. It would go through with at least 90 votes,” Schiff noted, underscoring the artificial nature of the current impasse.
He revealed that a recent motion offered by himself and Senator Alex Padilla to reopen FEMA was also blocked by Republicans. “No, their response is we’re not going to do anything until we get more money for ICE and we are not about to go along with the reforms that you’re seeking,” Schiff explained. This refusal to fund disaster relief and airport security measures, he argued, directly harms the public while Republicans pursue their agenda for increased border enforcement funding.
Questioning Republican Priorities
Schiff questioned the substantial funding already allocated to ICE and Border Patrol, stating, “Republicans in that big ugly bill gave ICE more money than the FBI gets, more money than frankly all the federal law enforcement agencies put together.” He highlighted a reported 360 percent increase in their budget for lethal and non-lethal materials, concluding, “So they’ve got plenty of money, and they’re plenty well armed.” The crux of the issue, in Schiff’s view, is not a lack of resources but a lack of accountability and adherence to the law, citing “court after court, Republican-appointed judges, Trump judges, among others, say that they have never seen such rampant violation of court orders.”
The Senator suggested that Republican lawmakers are prioritizing loyalty to the President over the needs of their constituents and the functioning of essential government services. “Until they’re willing to exceed to the needs of their constituents and until they’re more afraid, frankly, of their voters than there are of the president, we may be at an impasse,” Schiff concluded, expressing frustration with the ongoing gridlock.
What’s Next
The current impasse highlights a deep division in Congress over immigration policy and the appropriate use of federal funds. As TSA agents work without pay and the specter of unfunded disaster relief looms, the public faces the direct consequences of this political deadlock. Future negotiations will likely center on whether Republicans will concede on reform demands to secure TSA and FEMA funding, or if Democrats will continue to resist increased appropriations for border agencies without stricter oversight and accountability measures.
