Sarah Strong Claims Naismith Award, Fuels UConn’s Championship Drive

Sarah Strong has officially been named the Naismith Women’s Player of the Year, adding her name to a legendary list of UConn Huskies who have earned the prestigious honor. This marks the eighth time a UConn player has won the award, a testament to the program’s consistent excellence and tradition of producing top talent.

Strong expressed deep gratitude for the award, calling it a great honor. “It’s very humbling to see all the names that have also received this,” she stated. “I’m just very proud of my teammates for kind of helping me get here.” The recognition highlights Strong’s exceptional individual performance throughout the season, solidifying her status as the nation’s best player.

UConn has long been a magnet for elite talent, attracting players like Strong, Aaliyah Edwards, and Paige Bueckers. Strong acknowledged the benefit of playing alongside such gifted athletes. “I’ll say I learned a lot from them,” she explained. “They’re all really smart players and they’re great leaders. I think they lead in very different ways, but I think I’ve just learned that everyone has their own way of leading.” This environment fosters growth and allows players to learn from each other’s diverse strengths.

Coaching and Motivation

Despite the team’s overwhelming success, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, known for his demanding coaching style, still finds areas for improvement. “Oh, there’s been plenty,” Strong said when asked if the team has given him reasons to push them. “Just literally anything. Anything.” She added that the team responds well to the feedback, using it as motivation. “It kind of helps us, but any aspect offensively or defensively is going to find something.”

The motivation within the UConn squad runs deep, extending beyond the coach’s directives. “I think a lot of it, I think all the players on our team, we want to put our team in the best position to win,” Strong shared. “So, we show up every day at practice with the same intent, hitting the same attitude, and all focus on the same goal.” This internal drive ensures the team maintains its high standards game after game.

The Road to the Championship

The ultimate goal for UConn is clear: another national championship. While winning is paramount, the team also focuses on the journey. “I would say some of that, but I think it’s also enjoying the last few games with the seniors, staying present, and just going all out for the seniors,” Strong reflected on the team’s approach to the final games of the season.

The Huskies are preparing to face a familiar foe in their next game – the team they defeated for the title last year. The target on their back is undeniable, with every opponent aiming to knock off the reigning champions. “Yeah, I mean it’s definitely hard, but I think at UConn, I feel like we’re used to that everywhere we go,” Strong said about playing with a target on their backs. “It’s going to be very important to lean on each other and just stay together through it.” This shared experience strengthens their bond and resilience.

Strong’s Leadership Role

When asked about her personal role on the team, Strong emphasized her commitment to doing whatever is needed. “I would say I do whatever my team needs in the moment,” she explained. “If that’s set a good screen, I’m grabbing it. If it’s get a good rebound, I mean, I’m going to get it. Whatever my team needs me to do, I’m going to do.” This selfless attitude is a hallmark of her leadership and contributes significantly to the team’s success.

Her all-around game and willingness to contribute in every way possible are precisely why she earned the Naismith Award. With two more victories potentially securing another championship, Strong and the Huskies are focused on finishing the season strong and celebrating their seniors.
