Russia Warns of WWIII as US Prepares Iran Strikes
Russia has issued a stark warning of potential World War III amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly preparing for a significant escalation of strikes against Iran, aiming to degrade its military capabilities. Diplomatic efforts are underway as regional powers seek de-escalation.
Russia Escalates Rhetoric Amidst US-Iran Tensions
Moscow has issued a stark warning, suggesting that World War III could be imminent if the United States continues its current course, particularly concerning its actions towards Iran. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, delivered a series of provocative statements, accusing the U.S. and its allies of waging a war against Iran to preserve global dominance. He characterized Europe’s response to these actions as “sickening” and labeled the United States and its allies as “pigs” unwilling to relinquish their influence.
Medvedev specifically criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump, asserting that his alleged “mad course of regime change” could trigger a global conflict. “Formally, the third world war has not started yet. But if Trump continues his mad course of criminal regime change, it will undoubtedly begin. And the trigger could be any event. Any event,” Medvedev stated, as reported by Russian state media. He further claimed that Iran, despite its current restrained response, possesses the capability to develop nuclear weapons with significantly enhanced power, a direct consequence, he suggested, of U.S. policy.

US Prepares for ‘Next Stage’ of Attacks on Iran
Concurrently, reports indicate that the United States is preparing for a significant escalation of attacks against Iran. According to a U.S. official cited by CNN, Washington believes it has successfully weakened Iran’s defenses and is now moving to the “next stage.” This phase will reportedly focus on destroying Iran’s missile production capabilities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and naval forces. The U.S. official noted that the initial round of attacks aimed to degrade Iranian defensive capabilities, and the subsequent actions will target key military assets.
The assessment comes as U.S. President Donald Trump boasted about America’s military strength, claiming the nation possesses “virtually unlimited weapons stockpiles” capable of sustaining conflicts indefinitely. “As was stated to me today, we have a virtually unlimited supply of these weapons. Wars can be fought forever and very successfully using just these supplies which are better than other countries finest arms,” Trump stated. He also reiterated his criticism of the Biden administration, accusing it of depleting U.S. military reserves by providing extensive aid to Ukraine without adequate replacement.
Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions and Diplomatic Maneuvers
Concerns over Iran’s nuclear program have also surfaced. A former U.S. envoy, citing information from negotiations earlier this year, claimed that Iran had admitted to possessing 460 kg of 60% enriched uranium, enough to produce approximately 11 nuclear bombs. The envoy stated that Iranian negotiators were reportedly proud of circumventing international oversight protocols.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized that the primary U.S. objective regarding Iran is to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. She suggested that Iranian nuclear facilities may be intended for military purposes beyond peaceful uranium enrichment. However, she also stressed that a prolonged military operation is not envisioned, stating, “There’s just no way that Donald Trump is going to allow this country to get into a multi-year conflict with no clear end in sight and no clear objective.”
Regional Diplomacy and European Cooperation
Amidst the heightened tensions, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are reportedly lobbying allies to encourage a de-escalation and find a resolution to the conflict with Iran. Sources suggest these Gulf states aim to prevent further escalation and mitigate potential economic disruptions, particularly concerning energy markets. The prospect of a prolonged regional war is a significant concern for these nations, fearing impacts on tourism, foreign investment, and air travel.
In parallel, European powers are strengthening their defense cooperation. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany and France have established a “nuclear steering group” to coordinate on deterrence issues. This initiative, led by Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to take concrete steps, including conventional German participation in French nuclear exercises, before the end of the year.
Zelensky Mocks Orban, Discusses Ukraine Aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also made headlines, notably by mocking Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s statements regarding the condition of the Druzhba oil pipeline. Zelensky questioned Orbán’s ability to assess the pipeline’s technical state from afar, implying a lack of direct knowledge. He also addressed Hungary’s and Slovakia’s calls to restore the pipeline, emphasizing the potential human cost for Ukraine due to ongoing Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Zelensky confirmed that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has agreed to a personal meeting, with potential dates set between March 6th and 9th. Zelensky expressed his expectation for Fico’s visit to Ukraine, despite suggestions to meet in a third country. The Ukrainian president also reiterated Ukraine’s potential to assist Middle Eastern countries in neutralizing Iranian Shahed drones, contingent on Russia agreeing to a ceasefire. Zelensky proposed that Middle Eastern leaders could persuade Moscow to implement a temporary ceasefire, after which Ukraine would deploy its drone interception specialists.
What’s Next?
The coming days will be critical in observing whether the U.S. proceeds with its planned escalation against Iran and how Tehran responds. Diplomatic efforts by regional players and international bodies will be crucial in averting a wider conflict. Additionally, the evolving defense cooperation between European nations and the ongoing geopolitical realignments will bear close watching.
