Rubio Outlines Strategy Against Iran Without Ground Troops

Senator Marco Rubio stated that the United States can achieve its objectives regarding Iran without deploying any ground troops. Speaking to reporters, Rubio detailed a strategy focused on weakening the Iranian regime through ongoing operations and encouraging allied nations to take a more active role in maritime security. The comments came as the U.S. awaits a response from Iran regarding a proposed 15-point plan.

Iran’s Role in Regional Instability

Rubio strongly criticized Iran’s influence in the Middle East, labeling it a “destabilizing, dangerous, evil force.” He pointed to Iran’s alleged backing of various groups, including Hezbollah, Shia militias in Iraq, Hamas, the Houthis, and the Assad regime in Syria. “Every problem in the Middle East tracks back to Iran,” Rubio asserted, highlighting the country’s alleged role in sponsoring terrorism and causing widespread suffering.

US Operations Aim to Weaken Iranian Regime

The Department of Defense is actively engaged in operations designed to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten its neighbors and the world. Rubio noted that these operations are progressing successfully and ahead of schedule. “Every single day, Iran gets weaker and weaker,” he stated, emphasizing the effectiveness of the current approach. The U.S. is not seeking assistance from other countries for these operations, as President Biden has made clear the nation does not require help in this conflict.

Strait of Hormuz Security a Global Concern

A significant point of discussion was Iran’s potential to disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio called Iran’s threats to make the strait “tolling thing” unacceptable, stating that the entire world should be outraged. He emphasized that while the U.S. is impacted, many other countries, including those represented at the G7, are far more affected. “The whole world should be outraged by it,” he said.

Call for International Action on Strait of Hormuz

Rubio urged countries most impacted by potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz to take action, offering U.S. assistance. He explained that after the current conflict concludes, the first tankers passing through the strait will likely require escorts for insurance purposes. Furthermore, he warned that Iran might attempt to charge tolls or threaten passage. “The world better step up and do something about it,” Rubio advised, encouraging powerful and capable nations to lead in forming a coalition to ensure freedom of navigation. He reported a positive reception to this message from G7 countries, many of whom signaled their understanding and willingness to participate in future security efforts.

Cuban Economic System Criticized

In a separate discussion, Rubio addressed the situation in Cuba, criticizing its economic and governmental system. He argued that the communist regime is incompetent and incapable of economic development without fundamental changes. “Their system of government has to change because they will never be able to develop economically without those changes,” he stated. Rubio highlighted the suffering of the Cuban people due to the government’s unwillingness to implement necessary reforms. He noted the sad reality that Cubans often find success only after leaving their country, calling for a change in leadership, the governing system, and the economic model to improve Cuba’s future.

Concerns Over West Bank Violence

Rubio also expressed concern regarding violence by settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. He acknowledged that the U.S. has communicated these concerns, and believes the Israeli government shares them. Reports indicate that some individuals have also attacked Israeli security forces. The President remains firmly against any changes to the status quo in the West Bank, and the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation. Rubio expressed confidence that the Israeli government would take action to address the issue.

Chernobyl Repair Fund and Russian Oil Sanctions

Regarding the Chernobyl power plant repair fund, Rubio stated that the U.S. has not yet committed any funding, though the topic has been discussed. On the matter of temporary oil sanctions relief for Russian oil, he clarified that these sanctions are set to expire around April 9th or 10th and apply only to oil already at sea. He emphasized that this is not a permanent policy change and the U.S. will make adjustments based on global conditions. The President has not indicated a desire to permanently lift sanctions, and this measure is intended to ease global concerns by allowing certain oil shipments to be sold.
