Seth Rollins Reveals He Turned Down Triple the Money from TNA for WWE Opportunity

In a candid conversation on Club Shay Shay, wrestling superstar Seth Rollins revealed the pivotal moment he chose his WWE dream over a significantly more lucrative offer from TNA, detailing the agonizing wait and the ultimate payoff of his unwavering pursuit.

The Call That Changed Everything

The journey to superstardom is rarely a straight line, and for Seth Rollins, the path to WWE was paved with uncertainty and difficult choices. Rollins recounted how, back in 2009-2010, WWE wasn’t actively recruiting performers of his stature. “They were still looking for big dudes. They wanted you, you know, they wanted someone this size, right? They wanted 6’5, 250. They’ll teach you how to do the wrestling. I was really good at the wrestling, but I was never going to look like that,” Rollins explained.

Despite the uphill battle, Rollins, then a prominent figure in Ring of Honor, was determined to make it to the biggest stage in professional wrestling. His break came through a connection with Joey Mercury, a former WWE talent and a mentor to Rollins. Mercury, having connections within WWE, offered to help get Rollins’s name out there. “Joey got me the contact. I sent it out,” Rollins stated.

A Deal on the Table, A Dream on Hold

As his contract with Ring of Honor neared its end, Rollins found himself with a substantial offer from TNA Wrestling. However, his heart was set on WWE. “I had a deal on the table to for another company with TNA and I was like, you know what? I don’t want to sign this deal. I just don’t know if I want to sign this deal. Like WWE is where I want to be,” he shared.

With the clock ticking and a TNA contract looming, Rollins made a final plea to his WWE contact. “I said, hey, the talent relations guy said, look, I’m going to sign this deal with TNA if I don’t hear back from you,” Rollins recalled. The response was swift. “15 minutes later, he calls me back,” Rollins said, the memory still vivid. “Hey, kid. Uh, let me, uh, let me talk to my people.” This brief exchange led to an agonizing wait.

The Agonizing Wait and the Ultimate Reward

The following morning felt like an eternity for Rollins. “I couldn’t sleep that night. I was just like, ‘Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.’ Cuz it could have just been easy. He come back and he just say, ‘Ah, nah, never mind.’ You know, so nothing was on the table,” he described.

When the call finally came with the offer of an opportunity, Rollins was overcome with emotion. “You know, we’re going to give you an opportunity, dude,” he recalled. “I remember where I was standing. I remember where I was looking. I remember everything.” The financial aspect became secondary. “I didn’t give I didn’t give it damn how much the money was for. I didn’t care. I was like, ‘That’s all I ever wanted was an opportunity. This is the biggest wrestling company in the world. This is my dream. This is all I ever wanted.'” Rollins revealed that he turned down “at least triple the money” from TNA to pursue his WWE aspirations.

A Meteoric Rise and a New Era

The decision proved to be a masterstroke. After signing with WWE, Rollins spent two years at their training facility in Tampa, Florida, a period he described as being in a “warehouse for two years, basically in a holding cell.” However, upon his main roster call-up alongside Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) and Roman Reigns, they ignited a revolution.

“When we burst onto the scene, social media exploded,” Rollins noted, highlighting the beginning of social media’s significant influence on WWE’s audience reception. “They gave us the ball and they kept giving us the ball cuz we kept scoring touchdowns.” Rollins, along with Ambrose, was particularly ready to seize the opportunity. “Myself and John, we were both of that. You know, Roman was a little bit greener… Myself and John, we were ready and we knew we were ready. And when the time came, we took that ball and we ran with it and we changed everything.”

Rollins’s career trajectory within WWE has been nothing short of remarkable, culminating in him becoming a WWE Champion. He acknowledged that while some may have been handed opportunities, his own path was a testament to perseverance.

Advice for Aspiring Wrestlers

Drawing from his own extensive experience, which includes owning and operating the Black and Brave Wrestling Academy for over a decade, Rollins offered sage advice to aspiring wrestlers facing similar struggles.

  • It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint: “You really have to try to create a scope of time in your brain. It is just going to take a long time. But that process, you have to learn to enjoy that process.”
  • Dream Big, Take Small Steps: “I want you to shoot for the moon… But understand that it takes little steps to get there. And it is going to be hard sometimes, but that difficulty is what makes it worth it.”
  • Embrace the Journey: “The journey will be the thing that you remember. It’s not the moments. It’s not the milestones. It’s not the accolades… It’s the process. It’s the people you met along the way.”
  • Focus on Your Own Path: “You can’t look at it as as, oh, it’s unfair. You just have to you have to focus on yourself. What’s your journey? How are you going to take the next step to be better than you were the day before?”

Rollins emphasized that the highlights reel often omits the years of struggle, the rejections, and the countless independent shows in less-than-ideal venues. “People only see that. The people only see that. And so they like, ‘Oh, it was easy. It was easy for them.’ But they don’t realize like every professional athlete or whoever… it’s a process to get there. It’s a slog.” His message is clear: the dedication, the resilience, and the process are what forge true champions, far more than the glittering accolades alone.
