Rep. Slams “Disrespect” Amid Iran Briefing Lapses, Gas Price Woes
A Democratic Representative has criticized the Trump administration for failing to provide meaningful briefings on the Iran conflict, calling it "real disrespect" to Congress. The lawmaker also addressed rising gas prices and the need for clean energy, while questioning the administration's funding priorities and transparency.
Congress Left in Dark on Iran Conflict, Lawmaker Claims
A Democratic Representative has voiced strong criticism, calling the Trump administration’s lack of recent briefings on the Iran conflict a “real disrespect” to Congress. The lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Congress has not received meaningful updates on the situation in weeks. This comes as the administration reportedly seeks $200 billion, a request that has left many lawmakers feeling uninformed and frustrated.
“Inadequate” Briefings and a $200 Billion Question
The Representative, who serves on the Appropriations Committee, highlighted the stark contrast between media access to the President and the information provided to elected officials. “Steph got more access to the President than members of Congress do,” the lawmaker stated, referring to a recent news interview. “We haven’t been briefed in the last couple of weeks really in a meaningful way by the President or his team, save for one briefing that really was inadequate.”
With the conflict now in its third week and lacking a clear end game or coherent strategy, Congress is being asked to consider a massive funding request. However, details about how the $200 billion would be spent are reportedly being learned through news reports, not official channels. “We have to read about the details in the paper just like everybody else,” the Representative said. “It’s completely unacceptable.”
Concerns Over Funding Priorities
The lack of transparency has led to strong opposition to the funding request, even before details are fully known. “We would be a no, but we need to know,” the lawmaker explained. “Both are true. We need to know more, and that we know very little right now.” The Representative pointed out that $200 billion could have funded crucial domestic priorities, such as extending healthcare tax credits for years or providing food assistance to millions. “Evidently, [these priorities were] too expensive for the president, too expensive for this administration. But they’re willing to fund war,” the lawmaker added.
Gas Prices Surge, Promises Broken
The discussion also turned to rising gas prices, which are nearing $4 per gallon nationwide, with averages around $3.91 according to AAA. In California, prices are even higher. The Representative accused the President of lying about his ability to lower gas prices, recalling promises made during the State of the Union address just three weeks prior. “He said gas is $1.85. I mean, that was a complete lie,” the Representative stated. “And since then, it’s gone up by a lot.”
The Case for Clean Energy Independence
The volatility of gas prices serves as a stark reminder of the need to move away from fossil fuels. “Oil as a global commodity… is constantly a reminder that we need to get away from the bad geopolitics of fossil fuels,” the Representative explained. “It’s not only bad for our environment, it’s very bad for our economy as well when you have that volatility that is so linked to transportation, so linked to the goods and services that we all buy.” The push is for “affordable energy that’s also clean energy.”
Proposed Legislation for Energy Transition
To address these issues, the Representative is backing legislation aimed at easing the burden on Americans and promoting clean energy. The proposed bill seeks to reinstate tax credits for solar and wind energy. It would also significantly improve the nation’s transmission grid, which is currently a bottleneck for clean energy projects. “It’s very tough for developers who want to build transmission projects,” the lawmaker noted. “They just can’t get this stuff built. Making it easier and streamlining is very important.”
Bipartisan Hopes and Republican Hesitation
Despite the upcoming midterm elections, the Representative expressed a desire for bipartisan cooperation on certain aspects of the energy legislation. One key provision aims to ensure that large, multi-trillion dollar companies, particularly those operating data centers, bear the costs of energy infrastructure rather than passing them on to consumers. “That should be very bipartisan,” the lawmaker insisted. However, the Representative lamented that many Republican colleagues seem hesitant to speak out against the President, even on issues with potential bipartisan support.
Economic Reassurance Falls Flat
The Representative also addressed the President’s recent remarks on the economy, where he suggested that while conditions could have been worse, the economy is “not bad” and will improve soon. This message offered little reassurance to those struggling with higher prices. “I’m not reassured by much of anything this president says,” the Representative stated. Citing the discrepancy between the President’s claims of low gas prices and the reality at the pump, as well as a reported 13% increase in electricity bills last year, the lawmaker concluded, “You can tell the President’s lying if his mouth is moving.”
