Rep. Garcia: Trump Holds Airports Hostage for Voter ID Laws
Travelers are facing severe airport delays due to a government shutdown, with Congressman Robert Garcia accusing former President Donald Trump of holding airports 'hostage.' Garcia claims Trump is blocking funding for the TSA to push for voter ID laws and election reforms, preventing essential workers from receiving pay. The congressman also linked the shutdown to rising economic pressures, including high gas prices.
Long Lines Plague Airports as Shutdown Continues
Travelers across the United States are facing frustratingly long security lines at airports, with some waiting for over four hours. This situation highlights a deepening crisis within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), as officers work without guaranteed pay due to a partial government shutdown. The frustration is palpable among travelers, many of whom are questioning why Congress is not prioritizing a solution.
One traveler in Houston voiced a common sentiment: “I feel like our congressmen should kind of pay attention and get the job done, you know? Do what you need to do to pay these people.” Another added, “It’s hard to expect somebody to come work for free. I’d like to see our congressmen stand in this line and see if they enjoy it like the normal everyday voters do.” These sentiments underscore the public’s desire for elected officials to experience the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.
Democrats Blame Trump for Shutdown Stalemate
Congressman Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, expressed strong disagreement with the current situation, calling it unacceptable. “Congress should not be going anywhere and certainly not on a long recess… until this is solved,” Garcia stated. He emphasized that Democrats have put forward multiple proposals to fully fund the TSA and reopen the government. These proposals have reportedly been rejected by Republicans multiple times.
Garcia specifically pointed to former President Donald Trump as the reason for the ongoing stalemate. “The president, Donald Trump, said absolutely not. He wants reforms on the SAVE Act. He wants to pass all these voter restrictions and doesn’t actually want to hear proposals to reopen our airports,” Garcia explained. He accused Trump of holding “our American airports hostage” to focus on election conspiracy theories and voter ID laws, rather than ensuring essential government services are funded.
“So right now, we have our American airports hostage because the president wants to instead focus on election conspiracy theories and make it harder for people to vote. Let’s pay our TSA officers. We can pass that and get it done today.”

A Bipartisan Deal That Wasn’t
According to Garcia, a deal was on the table that would have funded the TSA and other essential agencies. However, he claims that Trump intervened, demanding that the focus shift to his proposed reforms, which lack broad support in the Senate. “It is right now unconscionable that the president will not support a bipartisan proposal to fully fund our airports and TSA agents,” Garcia asserted, urging Senate Republicans to “start listening to the American people.”
The congressman also addressed criticism that Democratic proposals are not serious. He clarified that the current Democratic plan is straightforward: fully fund homeland security, including the TSA, and address modest reforms for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) separately. “Let’s put ICE to the side. Let’s continue to negotiate reforms on ICE, and let’s fund the entirety of the rest of the government. Let’s fund TSA right now, today,” Garcia urged.
Broader Economic Concerns Raised
Beyond the airport chaos, Congressman Garcia touched upon other economic anxieties facing Americans. He highlighted rising gas prices, which have neared $4 per gallon nationally and reached nearly $6 per gallon in his home state of California. Garcia blamed these rising costs, in part, on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, questioning the mission and purpose of U.S. involvement.
“Talk about betraying the American public,” Garcia said, referencing Trump’s past promises to lower costs. “Donald Trump promised to lower gas prices. He promised to lower the cost of groceries, he promised to lower the cost of our rent, and they’ve all gone up.” He called for an immediate end to the foreign war to help bring down consumer costs, stating, “Instead, costs keep going up.”
What’s Next for Airport Funding?
The standoff over TSA funding continues, with travelers bearing the brunt of the shutdown. Democrats are pushing for a clean funding bill for the agency, while Republicans, influenced by former President Trump, appear focused on unrelated legislative priorities. The coming days will be critical in determining whether a resolution can be reached, or if airport disruptions will persist, further impacting American travelers and the economy.
