Radcliffe’s New Show Blends Audience, Life’s Brilliance
Daniel Radcliffe is earning rave reviews for his one-man Broadway show, "Every Brilliant Thing." The unique performance actively involves the audience, with some selected to play characters. The play explores themes of depression and coping by focusing on a list of life's brilliant moments.
Radcliffe Stars in Unique One-Man Show on Broadway
Tony Award-winning actor Daniel Radcliffe is captivating Broadway audiences with his new one-man show, “Every Brilliant Thing.” The play centers on a character who transforms a simple childhood list into a deep reflection on life’s meaning. This deeply personal journey is shaped not only by Radcliffe’s performance but also by the audience, who become active participants in surprising and meaningful ways.
Audience Interaction is Key to the Performance
Radcliffe explained that the show features two levels of audience participation, emphasizing that no one is forced to take part. “First of all, all of it, none of it’s happening against to anyone’s will,” he stated. “I ask everybody if they want to be involved.” For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, Radcliffe distributes cards before the show. These cards have a number and a word or phrase. When Radcliffe calls out a number, audience members shout the corresponding word, creating a light, low-responsibility interaction.
Deeper Audience Involvement
For audience members seeking more engagement, the show offers a more ambitious role. Five audience members are chosen to play characters in the performance. These individuals do not know they will be acting when they arrive at the theater. “In the half hour before the show, I cast people in there,” Radcliffe said. “I have little chats with people and see if they’d be up for it.” These chosen participants then take on significant roles within the play.
Radcliffe’s Unique Role and Improv Skills
The show is described as a one-man performance, but it places an extraordinary demand on Radcliffe. The dynamic nature of audience involvement means the performance changes nightly, requiring significant improvisation. “There’s a little bit of improv involved as new audience members obviously give you different things each night,” Radcliffe noted. While much of the monologue is structured, several moments are more free-flowing, allowing for spontaneous changes.
Ensuring a Positive Audience Experience
Radcliffe sees his primary job as ensuring every audience member who participates has a positive experience. “It’s my mission that nobody should regret doing it,” he emphasized. He shared that even hesitant participants have often been very happy they decided to get involved. “I feel like there have been a few people that were hesitant to do it who ended up being very, very happy that they did,” he said, expressing hope that this reflects the general audience sentiment.

Thematic Depth: Finding Brilliance in Difficult Times
Beyond its unique structure, “Every Brilliant Thing” explores profound themes. Radcliffe described the show as having a “pretty sad start” that ultimately becomes “life-affirming.” The narrative begins with a young boy whose mother is suffering from severe depression. To cheer her up, he starts making a list of everything wonderful in the world. This act of list-making becomes a lifelong coping mechanism for him and shapes his positive outlook on life.
Connecting Noticing to Happiness
The play draws a clear connection between the ability to notice good things and overall happiness. “I think the play draws a pretty direct line between the ability to notice new brilliant things and… happiness,” Radcliffe explained. The process of creating the list even impacted the cast during rehearsals. “We all in rehearsals as well started making our own lists of kind of stuff and it has become a very nice way of going through the world,” he shared.
Radcliffe on the New Harry Potter Series
When asked about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, Radcliffe expressed his primary concern for the new young actors. “I literally, the only thing I care about is that the kids have a good time,” he said. He is happy the series is happening and that fans will have more of the Harry Potter world to explore. However, his focus remains on the well-being of the new cast. “My main concern is that Dominic and Arabella and Alistair are having a good time,” he stated, referring to the actors taking on iconic roles. “I hope they have as good a time as we did and I hope they’re being looked after as well as we are.”
