Pilot Sergeant Jim Farley and Deputy Levi Taylor initiated what is known as a skid rescue. This specialized maneuver involves flying the helicopter extremely low, close enough to touch the water. Deputy Taylor then climbed out onto the helicopter’s side. He carefully slid along the edge towards the struggling dog.

With incredible precision, Deputy Taylor managed to reach Cooper and pull him to safety. The entire rescue operation was completed in a swift six minutes. Afterward, Cooper was given blankets and care. He was then safely returned to his grateful family.

Sergeant Farley, the pilot, described the mission’s quick activation. “We were on patrol flight, we hear dispatch put out a dog in the middle of the river struggling to stay afloat,” he explained. “We both look at each other and go, oh yeah, we’re going on this.”

A personal connection also played a role. “I thought about my kids for a second because they have a Golden Doodle,” Farley shared. “So it was hitting home for a minute. I want to do everything I can to try to help this dog.” Once the plan was formed, the team acted decisively.

Deputy Taylor was the one on the helicopter skids, tasked with physically reaching Cooper. He confirmed that the department trains for such unusual situations. “We have several, we have the best pilots around. We make sure that we train for this,” he stated.

Taylor acknowledged the challenging conditions. Central New York can experience extreme cold, with ice often forming on rivers. Such rescues are not unheard of in their area. He also mentioned a similar rescue that occurred just two weeks prior, where two deputies entered the water to save a dog.

When asked about the moment of grabbing Cooper, Taylor relied heavily on Sergeant Farley’s precise flying. “I’m relying strictly on Deputy Taylor to tell me where I need to be, where the dog is, because I can’t see,” Farley noted. Taylor guided the helicopter, and eventually, Cooper was secured.

Once Cooper was safely aboard and the helicopter landed, the team met with other department members. These officers were ready with blankets and further assistance. Cooper was unharmed and returned to his family.

Both deputies expressed surprise at the widespread attention the rescue received. “I didn’t expect it to blow up like this,” Deputy Taylor admitted. He conveyed gratitude for the department’s support of its aviation unit, enabling such operations.
