Norway’s Epstein Fallout: A Case Study in Accountability?

Norway is facing a significant crisis stemming from the Jeffrey Epstein files, a situation that has led to swift action and real consequences, unlike the muted response in the United States. In the days following the release of the documents, Norway launched an independent inquiry into Epstein’s political connections. This led to former prime ministers and top diplomats facing police investigations and stepping down from their positions.

Royal Family Under Scrutiny

At the heart of Norway’s reckoning is Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the heir to the throne. The released files revealed years of emails and personal contact between the Crown Princess and Epstein, even after his 2008 conviction for soliciting sex from a minor. This revelation sparked public demand for answers, prompting Mette-Marit to participate in a televised interview.

In 2011, you wrote in an email to Epstein, ‘Googled you after the previous email. I agree it didn’t look so good.’ What did you Google and what was it that didn’t look good?

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure that out myself, probably as much as you have. I wish I had the rest of that email correspondence. But I hope and believe that if I had found information that made me realize he was an abuser, I wouldn’t have put a smiley face behind it. I know myself that well. But you wrote that something didn’t look good. What could that have been?

I don’t know. I don’t remember. It’s been 15 years. It’s hard to know.

This exchange intensified public questioning about judgment, transparency, and accountability at the highest levels of Norwegian society. The Crown Princess explained that after 15 years, she could not recall the specific details of her Google search or the context of her email, as she no longer had access to that email service or correspondence.

Broader Political Ramifications

Beyond the royal family, the Epstein files have significantly impacted Norway’s political landscape. Two of Norway’s most famous diplomats, Mona Juul and Terje Rød-Larsen, who brokered the Oslo Accords in the 1990s, were mentioned extensively in the papers. It has emerged that both were close friends with Epstein and visited him at his Palm Beach home.

Juul and Rød-Larsen are now under investigation for corruption, with authorities questioning what they received in return for their association with Epstein. Additionally, former Norwegian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg, who also led the Labour Party for years, is facing similar questions and investigations.

Trine Eilertsen, editor-in-chief of Aftenposten, one of Norway’s leading newspapers, highlighted the public’s continued questions. “We were all wondering what did she find when she Googled him and what didn’t look good. And she answered now that uh she she couldn’t remember. It’s 15 years ago… and uh she didn’t really answer it,” Eilertsen stated. She added that the public also wants to know if the Crown Prince or advisors were aware of Epstein’s activities, especially given Prince Andrew’s earlier association with Epstein came to light in 2010.

Institutional Vetting and Trust

The scandal has shifted focus from the Crown Princess’s personal judgment to the institutions surrounding the monarchy. Questions are being raised about how these institutions vet individuals before initiating relationships with members of the royal family. While royals are entitled to private lives, the process of bringing new people into their close orbit, as Epstein did, is now under intense scrutiny.

Unlike political figures who can be removed, the Crown Princess’s position is not elected. However, the public’s trust has diminished. Eilertsen noted, “The trust in the Crown Princess has fallen. But I think that is more that has more to do with the Epstein papers than really with uh her son.”

Crown Princess’s Personal Challenges

Adding to the difficult period for the royal family, the Crown Princess is also facing personal challenges. Shortly after the Epstein scandal broke, a criminal trial began involving her son, who faces multiple charges including rape. While the public generally understands that adult children make their own decisions, these combined events—the Epstein revelations, her son’s trial, and her own serious lung disease which prevents her from performing duties—have created a tough period for her and the family.

Contrasting Responses: Norway vs. US

The stark difference in responses between Norway and the United States is attributed to Norway’s political culture and a less politicized approach to scandals. In Norway, condemnation of ties to Epstein has come from across the political spectrum, with a focus on systemic and cultural issues rather than partisan politics. This bipartisan approach is seen as crucial for rebuilding trust in public institutions.

Norway also has a tradition of stepping down when facing police investigations, a practice that has seen some prominent figures like Ambassador Mona Juul resign immediately upon investigation. This contrasts with the United States, where the Epstein files have thus far resulted in minimal public accountability for those named.

The Future of Norway’s Monarchy

The scandal has disappointed many Norwegians who had hoped their royal family was separate from the international circles of the wealthy and powerful. However, there is a belief that trust can be rebuilt if openness and honesty are provided. “They are very forgiving if they if they get a good explanation. And uh they forgive people who have stumbled, fallen, uh done stupid things, uh had stupid relationships, but uh they need them to be open and and honest. And we are not quite there yet,” Eilertsen commented.

The events in Norway serve as a powerful reminder that accountability is not automatic but must be actively pursued by the public, the press, and institutions. This situation is now a test for Norway’s systems to demonstrate transparency, rebuild public trust, and hold even the most powerful individuals accountable.
