Nigeria Festival Turns Violent: Women Attacked in Ozoro
Women were sexually assaulted and filmed during a fertility festival in Ozoro, Nigeria, sparking national outrage and calls for justice. Victims, including university students, are seeking medical care and prosecution for their attackers. Police have arrested 18 men as investigations continue.
Women Attacked During Nigerian Festival, Sparking Outrage
A shocking video surfaced online showing a young woman being violently attacked and sexually assaulted during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria. The disturbing footage, which spread rapidly, ignited widespread anger and led to the hashtag #stoprapingwomen trending across the country. This incident was not isolated; other women were also brutally attacked and filmed by onlookers during what was supposed to be a traditional fertility festival.
A Victim’s Account of the Horror
One of the victims, identified by the pseudonym Amote, bravely shared her terrifying experience. “I was about to come down from the bike when a lot of guys started shouting. You people should hold her,” she recounted. “I tried my best to run but I was not able to escape.” Amote described how her clothes were torn as multiple men subjected her to physical and sexual assault. “Different boys were just dragging my breast, my body, putting hands in my trousers,” she stated, detailing the horrifying ordeal.
Festival Tradition Exploited
The attacks occurred during a fertility festival traditionally meant only for married women. This event typically involves married women marching to a shrine to receive blessings for pregnancy from a traditional priest. However, the festival’s traditions have reportedly been exploited by younger individuals who target women. Young women are usually advised to stay indoors during the festival, but this advice was disregarded, leading to the assaults.
The Lingering Trauma and Call for Justice
Amote spoke about the deep emotional scars left by the attack. “I have not been able to sleep well. If I am sleeping, I will be shouting,” she shared. “I don’t like thinking about it or seeing the videos because it makes me feel more traumatized.” Beyond the psychological pain, she is seeking medical care and demanding that those responsible be prosecuted. “I want justice,” she emphasized.
University Students Among Victims, Police Investigate
At least six victims have been identified, and tragically, they are all students from a local university. The notice for the fertility festival was written in the local language, which may have left people unfamiliar with the community unaware of the event and its specific customs. Authorities have pledged to provide the victims with all necessary support for their recovery. The police have reported the arrest of at least 18 men in connection with the attacks, and investigations are actively ongoing. A police spokesperson clarified that while the situation was serious, it was not being classified as rape as alleged online, but rather as a clear case of sexual assault, indecent assault, and harassment.
Activists Demand an End to Gender-Based Violence
Gender activist Umukoro stressed the urgent need for change, not just in Ozoro but across Nigeria. “We cannot allow this kind of behavior to continue in Ozoro or anywhere in Nigeria because we have seen similar festivals where this kind of behavior have been exhibited,” she stated. Umukoro believes the persistence of such violence stems from a lack of consequences for perpetrators. “The reason it keeps perpetuating is because there’s not enough consequences on the perpetuators, the abusers,” she explained.
Hope for a Safer Future
As Nigerians continue to demand justice and accountability, survivors like Amote hold onto hope. They aspire to live in a more inclusive society where women and girls can feel safe and secure, free from the threat of gender-based violence. The ongoing investigations and public outcry signal a crucial moment for addressing these deeply rooted issues.
What’s Next
Attention will now focus on the police investigation and the prosecution of those arrested. The community and activists will be closely watching to see if justice is served and if meaningful steps are taken to prevent such horrific incidents from happening again during traditional festivals. The broader impact on women’s safety in Nigeria and the potential for policy changes will also be key areas to monitor.
