Nairobi Floods: 23 Dead as Extreme Rains Submerge Capital
Nairobi is grappling with severe flash floods that have claimed at least 23 lives, submerged homes, and crippled infrastructure. As rescue efforts continue and more rain is forecast, anger rises over the city's inadequate drainage and flood management systems.
Nairobi Devastated by Deadly Flash Floods, Death Toll Climbs
Nairobi, Kenya – At least 23 people have lost their lives in the Kenyan capital following torrential rains that triggered severe flash floods late Friday. The deluge transformed roads into impassable rivers, downed power lines, and submerged thousands of homes, prompting a large-scale rescue operation involving the Kenyan army. Authorities warn the death toll could still rise as search and rescue efforts continue across the inundated city.
Homes Submerged, Lives Lost in Rapidly Rising Waters
Residents in Nairobi’s low-lying neighborhoods described a terrifyingly rapid rise in water levels. The floodwaters swept away belongings and, tragically, lives. One harrowing account from a resident detailed witnessing an elderly man, known for delivering eggs, being carried away by the torrent. His body was later found trapped beneath a car.
The destructive force of the floods claimed lives in various tragic ways. Some individuals were electrocuted by live wires submerged in water, while others succumbed to hypothermia after being drenched and unable to find shelter. The poor state of the city’s drainage system has been widely cited as a major contributing factor, with reports of people perishing even inside their vehicles.
Anger Mounts as Residents Blame Officials for Poor Infrastructure
As the immediate focus remains on saving lives and locating missing persons, a palpable sense of anger is emerging among the affected population. Many are directing their frustration towards Nairobi’s governor, accusing him of failing to deliver on campaign promises to improve the city’s drainage and flood management systems. The perceived inaction has amplified the devastation caused by the extreme weather event.
“The government of Nairobi is responsible for ensuring that the drainage system is taken care of. So, if there’s any garbage or any matter that finds itself in the drainage system, the county government is responsible for clearing the drainage systems. However, that has not been happening in many parts of the city…”

Infrastructure Failures Exacerbate Flooding Crisis
The city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure has been a long-standing issue. Reports indicate that a lack of regular maintenance and clearing of garbage from drainage systems has severely compromised their effectiveness. This failure, coupled with the haphazard construction of high-rise buildings on riparian land or directly over drainage channels, has placed immense pressure on the city’s water management capacity, leading to the catastrophic flooding witnessed.
Despite weather warnings predicting heavy rainfall, many residents feel the county government did not take sufficient preparatory measures, leaving the city vulnerable to the severe downpours. This perceived lack of preparedness has intensified the criticism directed at the governor.
Climate Change and Predictable Disasters
While flooding is not uncommon in Nairobi, particularly during the long rains (March to May) and short rains (September to October) seasons, the intensity and unpredictability of recent events are raising concerns. The current rainfall, measured at approximately 20mm, was forecast by meteorologists, but the resulting devastation has left many long-time residents stunned.
This extreme weather event in Nairobi starkly contrasts with the severe drought currently gripping northern Kenya, such as in Turkana. This juxtaposition highlights the complex and often contradictory impacts of climate change being experienced across the country and globally.
“With the recent changes in climate, it’s very hard for people to predict when it will rain and when it will not rain,” noted DW’s correspondent Felix Maringa. “But Nairobi has received this kind of rainfall, but many of the residents are saying they’ve never seen something like what they witnessed last evening.”
Forecast: More Rain Expected, Residents Urged to Stay Alert
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for continued heavy rains, with forecasts indicating that the downpours are expected to persist until March 9th. This extended period of rainfall poses a significant risk of further flooding and exacerbates the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. Residents are strongly advised to avoid flooded areas and, if living in low-lying regions, to relocate to higher ground and remain on high alert.
The situation remains critical as Nairobi braces for more rain, with the immediate future focused on the ongoing search for missing individuals, the assessment of extensive property damage, and the beginning of a grieving process for the lives tragically cut short by the relentless floods.
