METRO DETROIT – Michigan State Representative Samantha Stekloff described herself as “shaken to my core” following a disturbing shooting incident at Temple Israel, a prominent synagogue in the Metro Detroit area. Both Stekloff and Representative Noah Arbaugh, who are members of Temple Israel, were alerted to the situation and immediately returned to their district. “We kind of scrambled and got out of there, raced back to the district,” Stekloff recounted, highlighting the immediate concern for her constituents and community members.

Law enforcement agencies, including local police departments, were quickly deployed not only to Temple Israel but also to surrounding communities, including Farmington Hills, where Hillel Day School and Congregation Adat Shalom are located. Despite the unsettling nature of the attack, Stekloff noted that Temple Israel had a security system in place, including security guards. The sheriff indicated that the temple’s security team engaged with the perpetrator, a detail that Stekloff believes demonstrates the effectiveness of the preparedness measures. “The temple clearly had a security system in place. They had security guards,” she stated.

The shooting has brought renewed attention to the rise in antisemitism, particularly in the wake of the October 7th attacks. Stekloff referenced studies from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) indicating a consistent increase in hate crimes targeting the Jewish community. In response to these growing concerns, the state, in conjunction with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, allocated additional funding for Jewish communities. These grants have been instrumental in supporting enhanced security training for schools, temples, and senior facilities.

“One of the things we were able to do in conjunction with uh governor gretchen whitmer is we were able to provide additional funding for our Jewish communities, so our schools, our temples, our senior facilities were able to receive additional grants, and they really use those funds for training. That is why you’re seeing such an incredible response by the security at Temple Israel.”

The security response at Temple Israel during the incident is seen as a testament to the effectiveness of these investments in training and preparedness. “We have been following this for quite some time, but a lot has changed since October 7th. It has been very difficult in the Jewish community and we’re here trying to do our best, but this has definitely shaken the community,” Stekloff added.

Metro Detroit is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the country, and the attack on Temple Israel, described as potentially the largest Reform synagogue in North America, has amplified fears. The incident follows a recent attack on a church in the thumb area of Michigan and reports of incidents within the Muslim community in the state. “It seems like anybody of faith right now is a little bit more of the hate, because I think it’s individuals. And I don’t want to say broadly there’s a lot of hate for everybody, but the individuals who want to take their hatred and act on it in violent ways,” Stekloff observed, pointing to a rise in divisiveness over the past decade, particularly in politics, which she believes has “trickle[d] down to everyday Americans.”

Michigan also boasts a significant Muslim population, and Stekloff emphasized the ongoing efforts to foster cooperation and ensure the protection of all communities. “We have continued to work together to make sure that we’re all protected,” she stated, noting that the assault on freedoms is partly fueled by this pervasive divisiveness.

Concerns for Vulnerable Populations

A particularly alarming aspect of the shooting for Representative Stekloff is the presence of young children at the synagogue. “The thing that is scaring me the most is that these are preschool children,” she expressed. Thursdays are often busy at the synagogue due to a food bank, but the preschool program means the building is frequently filled with young students, making the potential for mass casualties a profound concern.

The effectiveness of enhanced security training, funded by recent grants, was evident during the incident. Stekloff, who previously served on city council, recalled the standard practice of deploying local police departments to synagogues during high holidays. However, she noted that law enforcement has been increasingly prepared for such threats over time. “Our law enforcement has been prepared, has been ready. And we’re just going to continue to go from here,” she affirmed.
