Governor Whitmer Leads Press Conference Following Temple Israel Attack
WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, joined by local officials and leaders from Temple Israel, held a press conference Thursday to provide an update on the attack at the Temple Israel synagogue and school. The event, which took place at the Temple Israel facility, highlighted the swift response of law enforcement and the resilience of the Jewish community in the face of hate. Governor Whitmer, alongside Rabbi Ariana Gordon, Senator Mallory McMorrow, and West Bloomfield Township Supervisor Jonathan Moche, emphasized the need for unity and a strong stance against antisemitism.
Swift Response Praised, Lives Saved
Rabbi Ariana Gordon of Temple Israel opened the press conference by expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community and for the efforts of law enforcement, Temple Israel security, and staff. “We are incredibly grateful for all of our local law enforcement, for our Temple Israel security, our teachers, our staff, all of whom safely were home last night with their families,” Rabbi Gordon stated, acknowledging the challenging emotional processing the community is undergoing.
Governor Whitmer lauded the “selfless courage” of Temple Israel’s security personnel, stating, “These heroes threw themselves in harm’s way engaging the suspect. And let’s be very clear, yes, this is a place of worship, but at the time that this attack was occurred, it was a school. 104 children aged five and younger here.” She also commended the Temple Israel staff for their quick actions in evacuating students and reuniting families. “The state of Michigan will wrap our arms around this community and support our local and federal partners every step of the way to keep people safe,” Governor Whitmer pledged.
Senator Mallory McMorrow echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that without the immediate and effective actions of private security, staff, and first responders, the situation could have been a “much, much worse” tragedy. “If it were not for the private security and the staff at Temple Israel and then the first responders, first on the scene, local law enforcement, if they had not all done their jobs almost perfectly, we would be talking about an immense tragedy here today with children gone,” Senator McMorrow said.
Condemnation of Antisemitism and Hate
Governor Whitmer unequivocally labeled the attack as antisemitism and hate. “Yesterday’s attack was anti-semitism. It was hate, plain and simple. We will fight this ancient and rampant evil. We will stand together as we do it, and we will call it out,” she declared. The Governor highlighted the alarming rise in antisemitism nationwide and urged for a reduction in hateful rhetoric, particularly in political discourse.
Senator McMorrow added a critical perspective on the pervasiveness of antisemitism, noting that the Jewish community faces disproportionately high numbers of hate crimes. “The Jewish community suffers 10 times the number of hate crimes than any other community in this country. So, it is an epidemic. And until we push back on that permission, we’re going to see incidents like this continue to proliferate,” she warned. She also pointed out the significant financial burden placed on the Jewish community, with over a billion dollars spent annually across the country to secure houses of worship and institutions.
West Bloomfield Township Supervisor Jonathan Moche, a member of Temple Israel himself, expressed the profound impact of such incidents on the local community. “Our thoughts are with all members of Temple Israel and their families. No community should ever feel unsafe gathering in a house of worship or sending their children to school,” Moche stated, thanking community partners like the Shannondoa Country Club for their support during the crisis.
Call to Action: Lowering Rhetoric and Standing Together
A central theme of the press conference was the urgent need to lower the temperature of public discourse and combat the radicalization fueled by online and media rhetoric. “People like the person that attacked this community yesterday get fumented by rhetoric that they see online and that they see on television and they hear on the radio. It radicalizes people and it endangers our fellow Michiganders. We cannot let this continue,” Governor Whitmer asserted. She called upon every individual to take responsibility for challenging antisemitism in their daily lives.
Senator McMorrow implored citizens to speak out against antisemitic remarks, even when they seem commonplace. “If you have a friend, a colleague, co-workers who are using anti-semitism in their daily life and feel like it’s just normal, please call that out wherever you see it,” she urged. Both officials stressed that antisemitism, regardless of its source, must be confronted.
When asked about the safety of the Jewish community attending services, Governor Whitmer stated her commitment to ensuring security while reiterating the importance of addressing the root causes. “I will work my hardest to make sure that we’re supplementing efforts to keep people safe. At the same time, in combination with that, turning down the rhetoric to keep these instances from happening, being able to respond when they do, but keeping them from happening in this first place is a part of our duty and our goal,” she explained.
Resilience and Determination of the Jewish Community
Despite the attack, the leadership and members of Temple Israel expressed a firm resolve to continue their religious and community practices. “We will continue to live proud Jewish lives. We will come back stronger and we will be there tonight on Shabbat services and tomorrow morning. That will not stop. That will not end. No matter how much they try, that will not stop us,” declared a Temple Israel representative, underscoring the community’s determination.
Governor Whitmer concluded the press conference by highlighting the remarkable inter-agency cooperation and the bravery displayed by those who responded to the incident. She expressed pride in the resilience shown by the West Bloomfield community and law enforcement, while simultaneously calling for reflection on why such attacks occur and what collective actions can be taken to prevent them in the future. “It should be a source of pride. It should also be a moment of reflection where we all ask ourselves why does this happen in this country and what can we each do to keep it from happening in the future,” Governor Whitmer stated.
Looking Ahead
As investigations continue, the focus remains on holding the perpetrator accountable and strengthening community safety measures. Governor Whitmer and Senator McMorrow’s calls for de-escalation of rhetoric and increased vigilance against antisemitism are expected to resonate throughout Michigan and the nation. The determination of the Jewish community to continue their practices, particularly Shabbat services, serves as a powerful testament to their resilience in the face of hate.
