McKenna’s Magic: Penn State Stuns in Frozen Four Run

The PPL Center was buzzing. It was the NCAA D1 Men’s Regional Finals, with Penn State facing off against Yukon. “We were always viewed as underdogs,” a player shared. “We definitely went in with that mentality and played with nothing to lose.” This Penn State team, which started Big Ten play with a tough 0-9 record, became the biggest surprise of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament.

Then came the moment. “Swing it back to Mars. Scores Penn State to the Frozen Four for the first time ever.” The excitement was electric. “As soon as I saw it go in and you hear everything and you see guys jumping off the bench, it’s just hard to describe how cool it was, but it was probably the best moment of my life,” one player recalled. That goal didn’t just win a game; it put Penn State on the map. It’s a goal that will forever be etched in Penn State history.

A Hockey School is Born

After just 13 years as a Division I program, Penn State had cemented its status as a serious hockey school. The energy from their Frozen Four appearance was still palpable just three months later when a major announcement dropped.

“Gavin, you’ve been mulling over quite a big decision about colleges. Where are you headed to school next?”
“The best spot for me in the next year will be uh Penn State University.”

Gavin McKenna, widely considered the projected top pick for the 2026 NHL draft, made a stunning decision. He chose to leave Canada’s Western Hockey League for Penn State. This was possible thanks to a recent rule change that allows Canadian junior players to be eligible for college hockey.

The McKenna Effect

The Penn State program was coming off a great season. McKenna explained how much that run influenced his choice. “Obviously, that played a big factor on me coming here,” he said. “I didn’t want to come to a team who wasn’t going to be a contender and it brought attention to my eye.”

Experts believe McKenna is one of the highest-profile players ever to commit to Penn State across all sports. The buzz was undeniable from his very first game with Penn State against Arizona State in October. “Anytime I touch the puck, I’d hear the boos and hear the ‘overrated’ chants and stuff like that,” McKenna recalled.

But he quickly made his own noise. “Gavin McKenna’s first collegiate goal. What a moment.” McKenna added, “I remember scoring my first goal, hitting the forks down celly. That was pretty fun.”

Trials and Triumphs

This season has been a whirlwind for McKenna and the Nittany Lions. They played in a memorable outdoor game at Beaver Stadium, with 74,000 fans watching. McKenna delivered, scoring a goal that had the crowd roaring.

However, later that same night, McKenna was involved in an incident following a team event. The 18-year-old faced felony charges after an altercation in downtown State College. When asked about the challenging period, McKenna reflected, “Yeah, those first two days were some of the craziest days of my life. I think obviously there was a big reaction to it. A bit blown out of proportion, but I think going through a little adversity at this time helps me honestly.” He added, “I’ve learned a lot from it. I think I’m under such a big spotlight that I’ve almost got to be perfect at all times. So, yeah, just being smart.”

Just two weeks after the most serious charges were dropped, McKenna put on an unforgettable performance against Ohio State on February 20th. He was instrumental in a dominant win. “Demarc wants it one time. Coming. Scores. Another point for Gavin McKenna,” the announcer exclaimed.

The bench was in awe. “What was going on the bench is he scoring like five, six, seven assists,” someone noted. “We were we kind of knew we kind of had track of how many points he had tonight. We just kept counting it off and we were like, ‘Holy crap.'” McKenna finished the game with an incredible eight points, including a memorable celly. “But I just have fun with it,” he said about his celebrations. “Hit the McGregor and then obviously that kind of blew up.”

Future is Bright

One observer commented on McKenna’s ability to handle the pressure. “I think you have to have that level of swagger and confidence if you’re as high profile as he is. Being able to just ignore all the noise and play his own game is something that I think is really important that he does.” Another added, “Just watching him just go, ‘How does he do what he does?’ And he just sees the game in such an unbelievably cool way. He’s the perfect storm.”

Led by McKenna, the Nittany Lions are no longer the underdogs they were last year. They are aiming to finish what they started in the NCAA tournament. “We went to the Frozen Four last year and obviously it didn’t go the way we wanted, but we can finish the unfinished business that we didn’t finish last year,” McKenna stated.

The team understands the expectations are higher now. “We knew that expectations on us this year were going to be high with the run last year. All the commitments we got. So, just using that motivation as fuel. We want to prove everyone wrong or right and get it done.”

McKenna’s arrival signals a new era for Penn State hockey. “Scores Gavin McKenna, Penn State.” He has brought belief to the program. “I give a lot of credit to him. It takes belief in Penn State. It takes belief in himself to come here and do the job that you are seeing that he’s doing. Those are the guys that we want here,” a coach remarked.
