Beirut Braces for Ceasefire Talks Amidst Fear and Grief

Beirut, Lebanon – The city of Beirut is gripped by a palpable sense of fear and uncertainty as residents await crucial peace negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, set to take place in Washington next week. This comes after devastating Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday left at least 357 people dead and over 1,200 injured, with the number of casualties still rising. The attacks, described as brutal, struck during the day while people were out conducting daily errands and picking up children from school.

Public Sentiment: A Mix of Hope and Trepidation

The mood in Beirut is one of anxious waiting. “The feeling is like waiting in fear,” said Najad Saliba, an independent Member of Parliament speaking from Beirut. “People are usually normal during the day, they rush to get their errands done and go back home waiting on the news and listening to the radio most of the time.” Many hope that discussions between the Lebanese President and the President of the United States will lead to a de-escalation of Israeli strikes.

Despite the grim reality, there is significant public support for the upcoming peace initiative. “The majority of the people, probably over 70% of the people, are in support of this initiative and in support of the government’s work in order for us to move forward with peace negotiations,” Saliba stated. This initiative, which began three weeks ago, is seen as vital because it places the Lebanese President at the forefront of the negotiations, removing it from the influence of Iran and its proxies within Lebanon.

Key Negotiations: Lebanon, Israel, and Iran’s Role

The upcoming talks in Washington are a significant development, aimed at establishing a ceasefire and potentially a broader peace agreement. “The deal has to be between Lebanon and Israel under the supervision and care of the United States,” explained Saliba. This structure ensures a neutral third party to oversee any agreements and commitments made.

A central demand from the Lebanese side is a clear separation between Lebanon’s fate and that of Iran. “We want a complete separation between our fate and the fate of the Iranian people,” Saliba emphasized. “Our negotiations have to include and care for the sovereignty of the country and the security of the Lebanese people.” Lebanon desires Iran to cease its interference in Lebanese politics, underscoring the importance of the President and government leading these talks without external pressure from Iran or its allies.

Hezbollah’s Stance and Concerns

Hezbollah has already voiced its disapproval of the peace negotiations, taking to the streets in protest. “They already started showing discomfort and disapproval of these negotiations,” Saliba noted. While acknowledging the right to protest, there are hopes that these demonstrations will remain peaceful and not escalate into violence or pose a threat to national security.

Regarding the recent deadly strikes, Saliba placed the blame squarely on Israel. “The blame is definitely on Israel because the strikes came many at once, like hundreds of strikes in 10 minutes, and it came during the middle of the day when people were doing their own work in the streets.” He added that Hezbollah has no right to dictate peace or war within Lebanon without government consent, suggesting Hezbollah’s actions are pushing Lebanon into a conflict it did not seek.

A Turning Point for Lebanon

The impending meeting between Israeli and Lebanese representatives in Washington is viewed as a critical juncture for Lebanon. “This is a very important turning point in Lebanese politics,” Saliba affirmed. The hope is that these negotiations will lead to Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territories and establish a foundation for lasting peace between both nations.

Looking Ahead

As Beirut holds its breath, the focus remains on the upcoming Washington talks. The success of these negotiations could pave the way for a much-needed ceasefire and a path towards stability. However, the influence of regional powers and internal political dynamics, particularly concerning Hezbollah’s role, will continue to be closely watched. The outcome will significantly shape the future security and sovereignty of Lebanon.
