Lavonte David Calls It a Career After 14 Legendary Seasons
After an incredible 14-year run in the NFL, linebacker Lavonte David has decided to retire from the game. David, a Super Bowl champion and one of the most durable and respected players of his era, announced his decision yesterday, bringing an end to a career that many believe will lead him to the Hall of Fame. He joined The Pat McAfee Show to discuss his decision and reflect on his time in the league.
A Difficult, Personal Choice
Retiring from a sport you’ve played your entire life is never easy. David explained that the decision came down to what would make him happy for the rest of his life. After much thought and discussion with friends, family, and the Buccaneers organization, he felt it was the right time to hang up his cleats. “I just decided it was time to hang it up,” David said. “Ultimately I just thought about you know what was my motivation? What will keep me going and it just came down to just you know I’ve done enough for the game.” He feels he made his mark, impacted his peers, and built a name for himself, and now it’s time to let the next generation take over.
Durability: A Hall of Fame Trait
One of the most remarkable aspects of David’s career was his incredible durability. He played at least 12 games in every single one of his 14 seasons, a feat that is almost unheard of at the demanding linebacker position. “The durability question man I’m extremely proud of,” David shared. He credited his discipline and commitment to taking care of his body for his longevity. “I was a guy who never wanted to miss the game. I had to like really not be able to walk or run for me to not be able to play the next week.” He also thanked the great training staff that kept him healthy throughout his career.
A Buccaneer for Life?
David spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a rarity in today’s NFL. While he never initially planned on being a one-team player, he admitted there was a moment after the 2018 season when he considered leaving. After the team fired head coach Dirk Koetter and before Bruce Arians (BA) arrived, David discussed potential trades or releases with his agent, especially with the team transitioning to a 3-4 defense from the 4-3 he was accustomed to. However, Arians convinced him to stay, promising to build a team around him. “BA was the first phone call I took he was like man trust me I want you to be a part of this turnaround that we going to have,” David recalled. That decision paid off, as he went on to win a Super Bowl championship with the team.
Looking Ahead: Golf, Vacations, and Maybe Coaching
With his playing days over, David is looking forward to a well-deserved rest and some new adventures. While he joked about potentially gaining some weight and indulging in his favorite childhood treats during a “restaurant tour,” he plans to stay in shape but not with the same intensity. Golf is definitely on the horizon, as he’s looking forward to finally taking those lessons people have been pushing on him. He also mentioned the possibility of exploring scouting down the line, but coaching at a high level isn’t immediately in his plans. “I’ve been playing football since I was six years old, man. I never missed a year. So, 30 years straight of playing football, I think I deserve some time to myself,” David stated.
Paying Homage to the Linebacker Position
David also reflected on the linebackers he admired growing up, naming players like Zach Thomas, Jonathan Vilma, Ray Lewis, Derrick Brooks, and Broderick Thomas. He also gave shout-outs to modern greats like Patrick Willis, Luke Kuechly, Bobby Wagner, and David’s former teammate Devin White. He stressed the importance of physicality, intelligence, and leadership for the position, calling linebackers “playmakers” and the “leaders of the defense.” David also commented on the current state of the NFL, appreciating how offenses are challenging defenses, making the game more engaging for linebackers who love to “thump” and defend the run.
Lavonte David’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Buccaneers and the NFL. His combination of skill, toughness, and longevity set a standard for the linebacker position, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
