Kelce Returns! “Still Love This Game,” Says Chiefs Star

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is officially back for his 14th NFL season, and he’s making it clear that his passion for the game remains as strong as ever. Addressing the energy and motivation behind his decision to return, Kelce expressed his unwavering love for football and his commitment to the Chiefs during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

While the offseason always brings a period of reflection, Kelce indicated that the thought of retirement was a short-lived conversation this year. “It was uh it was pretty short and brief,” Kelce stated, addressing the possibility of stepping away. “The Chiefs knew where I was the entire time on it.” He elaborated on the process, explaining the need to “take a step back, breathe, let the emotions of the season settle down and see where the body is.” However, the core reason for his return is simple: “Man, I’m still I’m still in love with this game. I’d still love going to going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out, and just, you know, playing the game.”

The Mahomes-Reid Connection

A significant factor in Kelce’s decision is the continued presence of his star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and head coach Andy Reid. “And I think my best opportunity was playing for the Chiefs yet again, and uh and running this thing back with Pat Mahomes and Coach Reed,” Kelce enthused. The addition of Eric Bieniemy back to the coaching staff also played a role. “Got my guy Eric Benemy, Coach Benemy back. Um, there’s a there’s a lot of pieces in Kansas City that I I just uh I absolutely love and I can’t wait to get back in the building with him.”

Motivation from the Top

Kelce also spoke about the motivating influence of his fiancée, global superstar Taylor Swift. He drew a parallel between their shared dedication to their respective crafts. “She has we share the same love for what we do and we’ve had this you know fortunately we’ve had this desire since we were kids in our in our selective professions,” Kelce explained. “It’s just it’s amazing to see her keep going to the table keep finding new things to write about keep finding you know new melodies and things like that and on top of that still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does and um yeah, of course that’s motivating that’s motivating for anybody to see.” He believes her relentless drive inspires him to continue performing at his elite level, adding, “something like that definitely motivates me to say, you know what, I’m I’m not done either. You know, I still got some ideas in the back of my mind and still got some juice left to play this game.”

A Hungry Chiefs Squad

Despite the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl victory, Kelce acknowledges a sense of hunger within the team as they prepare for the upcoming season. “I think the the biggest thing was coming back was that we got to be even hungrier than than we’ve been before,” he said. “And talking to Pat, talking to coach Reed and the guys, it’s uh it’s a pretty there’s a lot of dog mentality right now to get this thing fixed.” This mentality, he believes, is already a powerful motivator.

Navigating a Tougher AFC

The landscape of the AFC has become increasingly competitive, with significant moves made by division rivals. Max Crosby’s move to the Ravens and the Raiders’ substantial spending have not gone unnoticed. “We’re seeing we’re seeing what the world’s doing right now. We’re seeing how everybody’s reacting,” Kelce commented on the external noise and the perception that the Chiefs might be declining. “But uh we know we got the nucleus in uh in Kansas City. We got some we got some big hitters in Kansas City, and we got Coach Reed. So, uh, we’re never out of this thing.” He sees the increased competition as a positive, stating, “That’s only going to make it make it for us to get better throughout the season and and be the best team we can be, uh, at the end of it.” The Chiefs aim to use the external doubt as fuel, embracing a bit of “pettiness and spite” to drive their performance.

Mom’s Renovations and a New Season

In a lighter moment, Kelce was asked about his mother Donna Kelce’s home renovations, a topic that has gained some traction. “I didn’t even know she was doing these things. If she needed a guy to come, you know, screw some door hinges in. She could have just called me,” he joked. The hosts playfully dubbed it “TMZ. Breaking news” and “Biggest news of the week,” highlighting the widespread interest in the Kelce family.
