Journalist Warns: Truth Under Threat in America
Journalist Jim Acosta warns that America faces a dangerous time for truth-telling, where power can crush verifiable facts. He highlights escalating pressures on the press, from revoked credentials to death threats, and links these issues to media consolidation and the rise of self-censorship. Acosta stresses the vital role of a free and independent press in safeguarding democracy.
Journalist Jim Acosta Sounds Alarm on Press Freedom
Independent journalist Jim Acosta is sounding the alarm about the state of truth-telling in America. Acosta, a former White House correspondent and host of The Jim Acosta Show podcast, believes the country is at a dangerous point for journalism. He argues that the ability to speak truth to power is being undermined when those in power can actively suppress the truth.
Past Conflicts and Escalating Pressures
Acosta recalled his own experience during the Trump administration when his White House press pass was revoked. He noted that Justice Department lawyers argued they should be able to decide who covers the president. This, he says, is similar to what is happening today with Pentagon briefings being filled with reporters friendly to the current administration. The arrest of journalists is another obvious concern for press freedom, Acosta stated.
He explained that the pressure on reporters has escalated over time. It started with insults and dismissals from officials, moved to revoking press credentials, and has now reached a point where journalists face death threats. Acosta shared that he and other journalists covering Trump have received such threats. He pointed out that this situation has worsened significantly, citing an instance where the Associated Press was reportedly banned from Oval Office and Air Force One briefings for not referring to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Acosta also mentioned the idea of renaming the Persian Gulf the “Trump Gulf” as an example of the nonsensical demands that can put pressure on journalistic standards.
Supreme Court Ruling and Its Impact
Acosta suggested that a Supreme Court decision granting Donald Trump immunity played a role in this trend. He believes Trump interpreted this ruling as a sign that he could act without accountability. This, in turn, has signaled to him that he can take actions, such as starting conflicts or making threats, without facing consequences. Acosta questioned whether threats like blockading streets are real or empty, highlighting the confusion this creates internationally.
The Vital Role of a Free Press
“The world can’t tell the difference. This is why a free and independent and strong press is vital in this country right now.”
Acosta stressed the importance of a free press, drawing parallels to his experience covering the Iraq War. He remembered reporting on the Abu Ghraib scandal and how crucial it was to be able to cover such events. He believes the ability to report on military actions that may violate American values is essential to upholding those values.
Media Consolidation and Oligarchs
Beyond direct government pressure, Acosta identified another threat: media consolidation. He expressed concern about large media conglomerates buying up news organizations. This concentration of ownership, he warned, could lead to a situation where a few powerful individuals, or “oligarchs,” control the news. He pointed to potential mergers like Paramount and WBD, which could result in a company with strong political leanings owning major networks like CBS and CNN.
This trend, Acosta argued, mirrors situations in countries like Russia and Hungary, where powerful figures influence media outlets. He cited the proposed Nexstar-Tegna merger, which could give one company control over local news for a vast majority of American households. Acosta questioned whether a press facing such control can truly be considered free and independent.
The Rise of Self-Censorship
When media ownership becomes concentrated, Acosta explained, the dynamic shifts. Instead of reporters struggling to find sources, the problem becomes journalists being told not to cover certain stories. This leads to a form of self-censorship, where news organizations begin to restrict themselves. He described a scenario where powerful individuals can call news executives and influence what is reported, leading to anchors and reporters being told to back down.
This, Acosta stated, is a different kind of crackdown on the media than what Americans have experienced before. He emphasized the need to maintain a strong, free, and independent press, calling it “the whole ballgame” for democracy. He also noted instances where public figures brag about removing certain hosts from their positions, seeing this as a concerning sign for the country’s democratic health.
