Johnson’s Gold: Injury Ordeal Fuels Olympic Triumph
Breezy Johnson reflects on her Olympic gold medal journey, highlighting the resilience gained from overcoming injury and the calming influence of knitting. Her gold medal win was made even more special by a proposal from her fiancé, Connor, who used one of her knitted hats.
Johnson’s Gold: Injury Ordeal Fuels Olympic Triumph
The journey to Olympic glory is rarely a straight line, and for downhill skier Breezy Johnson, it was a path paved with significant setbacks, culminating in a hard-won gold medal that felt all the more precious after a four-year wait. Johnson, speaking on SportsCenter, reflected on the profound impact of a major injury sustained just before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, an event that threatened to derail her dreams.
“Yeah, I mean obviously I crashed in Cortina actually in one of the races leading up to the Olympics in 2022,” Johnson recalled, describing the moment that tested her resolve. The memory of looking up at the imposing cliffs of Cortina, a place she once found beautiful but now recognized as potentially cruel, lingered. “You know, I remember just in the downhill looking up at the at the cliffs in Cortina. They’re very beautiful, but um remembering four years ago when I looked at them and I was like, you’re so beautiful and yet you’re so cruel sometimes and I don’t know how I’m going to come back here and try to win the medal that’s, you know, falling through my fingers right now.”
The reality of ski racing, Johnson acknowledged, is that it’s a demanding sport where injury is an inherent risk. However, she emphasized that overcoming such adversity ultimately shapes who you become. “It’s a crazy sport with ski racing and you really have to, you know, accept the the reality which is that it’s very difficult and injury is part of it. Um, but it’s, you know, definitely worth the wait.” This sentiment underscores the idea that the true reward often lies not just in the destination, but in the arduous journey itself.
Knitting a Path to Calm and Success
During her recovery periods, Johnson discovered an unexpected solace and focus in knitting. What began as a way to occupy her hands and manage nervous energy has evolved into a cherished pre-race ritual. “So, I actually started um knitting pretty aggressively after my first injury, which was in 2018,” she explained. “But leading into 2022, I was already knitting things. Um, but it’s, you know, it’s very calming for me. It gives kind of my hands something to do and, you know, works out that nervous energy.”
The unique creations born from her needles offer a sense of personal accomplishment and individuality. “At the end, you get to make stuff. I, you know, I really enjoy having things that are completely unique that I know nobody else in the world has and even can have,” Johnson shared. She admitted to a brief concern about whether she’d be allowed to wear her handmade items at the Olympics due to corporate sponsorships, but her need for these personal talismans was paramount. “I was like, ‘But I need this.'”
A Proposal Amidst the Olympic Glory
The emotional highs of the Olympics were further amplified for Johnson when her now-fiancé, Connor, proposed to her following the Super G event. Adding a personal touch, he did so while wearing one of Johnson’s knitted hats. When asked if she was more nervous about the race or the proposal, Johnson didn’t hesitate. “Definitely more nervous for the race.” She playfully added that Connor might have been more nervous about the proposal itself, though he claimed to be more anxious about her downhill race.
This dual celebration, blending her athletic career with her personal life, was a deeply meaningful experience. “That was just a really special moment and not something that was related to my own performance or not. So, it was very special to have that at the games and be able to kind of bring together the two lots of my life.”
‘Alchemy’ and a Shared Love for Taylor Swift
The relationship between Johnson and Connor is soundtracked by Taylor Swift’s “Alchemy,” a song that resonates deeply with their shared experiences. The lyrics, which speak to the profound connection between an ordinary person and an elite athlete navigating challenges, mirror their own journey. “The song is very much about, you know, a regular person and an elite athlete that are in love that are facing challenges, but they, you know, realize, you know, sort of the depth of that that love in moments of triumph,” Johnson explained.
Her relationship with Connor has broadened her perspective, adding a new layer to her drive for success. “Wanting to win and then wanting to be able to share that with the people you love, uh, is really something that’s even more special.” As a self-proclaimed “huge Swifty,” Johnson even extended an offer to teach the Grammy-winning artist how to ski, though she acknowledged the logistical challenges given Swift’s high-profile status. “I have heard some things from her team, but I don’t know that we will be skiing soon. She’s very busy.” Johnson understands the feeling of being in a “fishbowl,” having experienced intense public scrutiny herself after the Olympics.
Breezy Johnson’s Olympic journey is a powerful testament to resilience, the importance of personal rituals, and the profound joy of sharing triumphs with loved ones. Her gold medal is not just a symbol of athletic achievement, but a hard-earned victory forged through perseverance and a unique approach to conquering adversity.
