Izzo’s Spartans Reach Sweet 16 Again
Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans have reached the Sweet 16 for the 17th time in his storied career. Despite a less-than-perfect second-round performance, Izzo expressed pride in his team's development and acknowledged the tough competition ahead in the tournament.
Izzo’s Spartans Reach Sweet 16 Again
Michigan State is heading to the Sweet 16 for the 17th time under legendary coach Tom Izzo. This marks the fourth-most appearances in the Sweet 16 all-time, a testament to Izzo’s consistent success with the Spartans. The team’s journey continues with an eye on adding another championship to the program’s storied history. The last time a Big Ten team won the national title, it was Izzo’s Spartans back in 2000.
Izzo Reflects on Team’s Tournament Play
Coach Izzo recently spoke about his team’s performance in the NCAA Tournament. He felt the Spartans played very well in their first game. However, he noted that their play dipped in the second game, partly due to a strong effort from their opponent. Izzo specifically mentioned that his big men seemed a bit off in the first half, and point guard Jeremy Fears had some turnovers.
“We turn the ball over too much, which is a sin when you’re playing in the NCA tournament,” Izzo stated. “That’s not a good recipe for success.” Despite these issues, the Spartans managed to secure the win, largely due to their defense. Izzo praised his team for running their opponents off the three-point line, especially against guards who can shoot well.
“I did think we ran them off to three. They hit three threes real late. Other than that, I thought we did a phenomenal job,” Izzo said. He acknowledged that their opponents hit some threes, but pointed out that many came late in the game when the outcome was almost decided.
Joy in Victory, Misery Ahead
Despite the close calls and areas for improvement, Izzo expressed satisfaction with the win. He joked about being “happily miserable” but admitted he found joy in the victory. “I was just pleased because I think this team has come a long way,” he explained. Izzo feels the team has exceeded expectations in many ways this season.
Jeremy Fears’ Role and Growth
Izzo has always had a special connection with his guards, and Jeremy Fears is no exception. Fears had a tough first half but then stepped up his game. Izzo highlighted the importance of the point guard position, comparing it to a quarterback in football.
“For a quarterback, a point guard, Jay, you know it better than anybody,” Izzo said. “Those guys are the ones that stir the drink. And to win in the tournament, your guard’s got to be good.” While Fears was good enough to help them win their last game, Izzo believes he needs to be great to advance further.
“Yesterday he was good. I think to move on, he’s got to be great. And yet, we’ll work on that this week. And I think he’s ready to to take that next step,” Izzo added. The team will need Fears to elevate his play as they face tougher competition.
Elite Competition in the Sweet 16
The Sweet 16 presents a significant challenge, with Michigan State potentially facing powerhouse programs like Duke or teams coached by respected figures like Danny Hurley and Mick Cronin. Izzo acknowledged the high level of competition, comparing the regional semi-final to a Final Four atmosphere.
“That’s because it is a lot like a final four,” Izzo stated. He has great respect for coaches like Danny Hurley and Mick Cronin, whose teams have proven difficult opponents. UCLA, coached by Cronin, even defeated Michigan State in the Big Ten tournament.
Izzo’s brief moment of joy after winning was quickly replaced by thoughts of these elite opponents. “Thinking of one of those two teams, Seth, I’m gonna be miserable until Friday,” he admitted with a laugh. “I wanted to have one day of joy. You know, that was the way I did it.” The Spartans are ready to face their next challenge, aiming to make another deep tournament run.
