Missile Alerts Disrupt Daily Life in Israel

Tel Aviv, Israel – As the war with Iran enters its fourth week, Israeli citizens are living with the constant threat of missile attacks. Hundreds of missiles have been fired at Israel, with the Iron Dome air defense system intercepting most. However, the persistent danger has deeply affected daily life, forcing many to seek shelter multiple times a day.

Living Under Constant Threat

For residents like Ivon Tal, a music venue worker in Tel Aviv, the sound of a missile alert can come at any moment. She describes the exhausting routine of rushing to public shelters, navigating stairs and darkness, only to be called back down again after brief respites. “Every minute counts,” Tal explains, detailing the 77 steps she must descend and ascend, a task that leaves her tired and unfocused.

This constant state of alert has become the new normal for many. An estimated 470 missiles, including cluster bombs, have been fired from Iran into Israel. Additional attacks have come from Hezbollah in Lebanon. Depending on the origin of the missiles, residents in Tel Aviv have less than 10 minutes to reach safety. The fear is palpable, with one resident describing their heartbeat at “200” during an alarm, emphasizing, “It’s not a game.”

Seeking Refuge in Shelters

Some individuals without safe rooms at home are opting to spend entire nights in public shelters. “I’m here with my bathrobes every night, my PJs, my cats,” shared one person, who wakes up to this routine, hoping it will be worth the sacrifice. This necessity highlights the pervasive fear and lack of choice many feel.

Damage and Shaken Safety

While the Iron Dome is highly effective, it is not impenetrable. A recent heavy hit in a residential neighborhood in Tel Aviv caused widespread damage, even though no lives were lost. This incident, though close to home for many, has shaken the sense of safety. “It doesn’t actually feel like it’s getting better,” one resident commented, noting the chaotic blend of wartime and quarantine-like conditions, with workplaces and schools largely closed.

Divided Opinions on War’s End

Despite the daily disruptions, a significant majority of Jewish Israelis still support the war. A poll by the Israel Democracy Institute found that about 78% of Jewish Israelis favor continuing the conflict. This support stems from years of threats from the Iranian regime. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has outlined Israel’s war aims, including regime change in Iran, the destruction of its nuclear program, and its ballistic missile arsenal.

However, uncertainty about the war’s ultimate outcome is growing. Many citizens feel left in the dark about government decisions and the path forward. “As a citizen, I don’t know what they are deciding, and they didn’t tell the people in Israel what they do,” expressed one individual. The desire for a permanent solution is strong: “The best outcome is to solve the problem once and for all.”

Voices Against the War

While the majority supports the war, dissenting voices are emerging. Every Saturday, protests against the conflict are held, though organizers like Alon Lee Green from the movement Standing Together face limitations on gathering sizes. Green argues that promises of total victory are unrealistic, pointing to past conflicts that did not bring lasting peace. “Maybe it’s time to change the perception and to understand that we need to live in this neighborhood,” Green stated, advocating for long-term agreements and diplomacy instead of continuous fighting.

An Uncertain Future

As night falls again in Tel Aviv, residents like Ivon Tal prepare for another uncertain night. The hope for an end to the conflict is palpable, but the path to achieving it remains unclear, leaving many to wonder about the true cost and ultimate achievement of the ongoing war.
