Iran Talks Spark Caution Amid Trust Issues
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich urges caution regarding U.S.-Iran talks, citing Iran's history of deception. He also criticizes Democrats for the DHS funding dispute causing airport chaos and their opposition to voter ID laws.
Iran Talks Spark Caution Amid Trust Issues
New talks between the United States and Iran, or their representatives, have entered a critical phase. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich advises a cautious approach, urging people to “keep your hand on your wallet.” He notes that Iran has a long history of dealing with various U.S. administrations. Gingrich believes the Iranians will yield ground only slowly, and will lie and cheat whenever possible.
President Trump’s goal of a genuine breakthrough with Iran is seen as historic, especially since the Iranian dictatorship remains in power. However, Gingrich suggests the President has received a clear message from the world. Finding ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ensure oil flows freely is vital. President Trump has taken steps to achieve these objectives.
Uncertainty Clouds Negotiations
Gingrich admits that there isn’t enough information to predict the outcome of these discussions. He points out that the President has superior knowledge and intelligence compared to the public. Many smart people are working to resolve the situation. Gingrich reiterates that Iran is clearly talking to the U.S. through intermediaries.
He believes Iran’s primary goal is the survival of its regime. Understanding this, Iran must decide how much it needs to concede for its dictatorship to continue. Gingrich suggests that to keep the dictatorship alive, Iran may offer more concessions now than it would have just a few weeks ago.
Regime Change and Economic Pressure
During a press conference, President Trump mentioned “regime change” in Iran, a statement Gingrich found encouraging. He was also pleased the President focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and on Iran’s oil revenue. Oil money is Iran’s main source of income, funding its support for terrorism and other activities.
Gingrich asserts that the idea of Iran holding the upper hand in the Strait of Hormuz is incorrect. He states the U.S. Navy, positioned beyond the strait, has the superior position. The U.S. can apply more pressure and inflict more damage on Iran’s infrastructure than it has so far.
He suspects teams in both Israel and America are preparing for a swift response if negotiations fail. This preparation includes identifying targets and leadership elements to neutralize. Iran has already suffered significant losses and risks further damage.
DHS Funding Dispute Creates Airport Chaos
In domestic news, the funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remains a sticking point for Democrats. This has led to significant disruptions at U.S. airports. Stories are emerging of travelers facing waits of seven to eight hours due to unpaid Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents.
President Trump plans to deploy U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (ICE) agents to assist in non-security roles at airports. Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed strong opposition, stating that untrained ICE agents could harm or even kill civilians.
Gingrich strongly criticized Jeffries’ remarks, calling them “utterly stupid” and suggesting Democrats are “crazy.” He believes Democrats are deliberately making life difficult for Americans, hoping they will blame President Trump. Gingrich argues that Democrats could resolve the DHS funding issue immediately but choose not to.
He views the Democratic strategy as an attempt to create misery and turn public opinion against Republicans. Gingrich called this tactic “unpatriotic,” questioning how Democrats could believe Americans are unaware of who is causing the problem.
Voting Rights Reform Debate Heats Up
President Trump is advocating for the “Save America Act,” a bill focused on voting rights reform. Key provisions include requiring photo identification and proof of citizenship to vote.
Gingrich supports the idea of using the reconciliation process to pass this legislation. He suggests that significant funding, potentially around $200 billion, would be needed to enforce national voting rights and citizenship rules, similar to the cost of securing the border. He believes this approach could ensure the integrity of American democracy.
Gingrich highlighted a map showing that states Kamala Harris carried largely do not require voter ID. Conversely, states that do require ID tended to vote for Trump. He stated his belief that Democrats think they must be able to “steal votes” to win.
He noted that a strong majority of the country, including most Democrats, African Americans, and Hispanics, favor voter ID laws. Gingrich questions why Democratic leadership in Congress is fighting so hard against a policy supported by most Americans, including many within their own party.
