EU Grapples with Dual Crises: Iran’s Escalation and Ukraine’s Needs

The EU has pledged significant relief for Lebanon and is bolstering maritime security missions to protect vital shipping lanes, while key European nations are deploying advanced military assets to the Middle East. France has dispatched Rafale fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates, successfully downing Iranian drones, and the UK has reinforced air defenses in Bahrain and Qatar with Typhoon jets. Italy has also committed to providing aid, including anti-drone and anti-missile systems.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, acknowledged the direct impact on Ukraine: “There is clear uh impact on the war uh on on Ukraine as well because uh there is defense capabilities that are needed in Ukraine. Now moving also to the Middle East.” A primary concern is the strain on U.S. military stocks, particularly Patriot surface-to-air missile systems. While Europe procures Patriots for Ukraine from the U.S., these same systems are being supplied to the Gulf region, leading to rapidly depleting stockpiles. “The head stocks have been firing a lot of them. So the stocks are running low. Production is limited,” noted an analyst, highlighting the precarious balance of global defense resources.

Experts caution that while valuable, these systems may not be sufficient to counter the full spectrum of threats posed by Iran. The region faces not only drone attacks but also missile launches, necessitating the continued bulk supply of advanced systems like the Patriot. “Experts say counter drones are not enough for the Gulf since Iran is also firing missiles and patriots are still needed in bulk,” the report states, underscoring the continued demand for high-end air defense capabilities.
