Iowa Democrats See Senate Opportunity

Democrats in Iowa are feeling a surge of optimism, believing they might finally win a U.S. Senate seat in the traditionally Republican state. This hope is fueled by recent Democratic wins in other areas, like a liberal judge’s victory on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and a surprisingly close election for a congressional seat in a Republican stronghold. Iowa State Representative Josh Turek is one of the Democrats aiming to unseat Senator Joni Ernst, who is not seeking a third term.

Turek’s Grassroots Campaign Strategy

Turek, who successfully flipped a state house seat in an area twice won by Donald Trump, attributes his past victories to a relentless work ethic. He compares his approach to basketball, emphasizing outworking opponents and engaging directly with voters. “I wasn’t supposed to be able to win a state house seat that Trump won twice, but I campaigned just like I played basketball. Out working everyone. Pushing the hills. Crawling the stairs,” Turek explained. His strategy focuses on having conversations with everyday Iowans, regardless of their party affiliation. This direct approach led to a narrow six-vote win in his first race and a five-point victory in the next, in what was considered Iowa’s reddest district held by a Democrat.

Addressing Iowans’ Concerns

Turek believes Iowans are struggling due to what he calls “bad federal policy.” He highlighted issues like soaring gas prices, an unpopular war with Iran, and economic hardship for farmers facing foreclosures because of tariffs. “Iowans are hurting everywhere that we’re going. It doesn’t matter where we’re at, urban areas, rural areas. Iowans are saying they’re hurting,” he stated. Turek also pointed to rising healthcare costs, with many Iowans seeing their premiums double or triple. He sees this moment as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to reclaim a Senate seat, referencing the legacy of former Senator Tom Harkin, a champion of the Americans with Disabilities Act. “WE CAN WIN HERE IN IOWA. THIS REALLY IS. WE ARE A STATE THAT HAS BOTTOMED OUT AND WE’VE GOT NO POWER OF INCUMBENCY AND WE’VE GOT INDEPENDENT POLLING SHOWING MYSELF AND ACTUALLY HINTS AND TIDE, WE CAN WIN THIS IN THIS RACE,” Turek asserted.

Focus on Economic Inequality

A key theme in Turek’s campaign is economic fairness, as indicated by his slogan, “No More Tax Cuts for the Billionaires.” He sees a significant divide between the wealthy and working-class Americans. “We really have two Americas. We had the haves and the have-nots and what we’ve had from THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AND FROM INDIVIDUALS LIKE ASHLEY HINSON IS JUST LOOKING OUT FOR THE BILLIONAIRES AND THE LARGE CORPORATIONS,” Turek said. As a “genuine prairie populist” who doesn’t come from wealth, Turek connects with voters by discussing the need for a livable wage, affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and action on water quality. He aims to be a voice for the middle class and those who cannot afford lobbyists, drawing on his own experiences with economic and healthcare challenges.

Potential Democratic Gains in Iowa

The political landscape in Iowa appears to be shifting, with Democrats also seeing a potential path to victory in the gubernatorial race. The race for Iowa’s governor has moved from leaning Republican to a toss-up, according to a recent report from Cook Political. Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand is running a strong campaign. Turek believes that a victory for Sand could help lift other Democrats on the ballot, including himself. “I THINK A POTENTIAL SAND VICTORY WOULD LIFT DOWN BALLOT DEMOCRATS, INCLUDING IN the reddest district that was won by a Democrat in 2024,” Turek noted. He believes his ability to appeal to independents and moderate Republicans, similar to Sand’s strategy, is crucial. Both candidates are focusing on populist themes like livable wages and affordable healthcare, which Turek sees as the “way forward.”

A Generational Opportunity for Democrats

Turek views the current political climate as a significant opportunity for Democrats in Iowa. He recalls winning three out of four congressional races in Iowa during Trump’s first midterm elections. Now, he senses even more energy and a stronger desire for change across the state. “THERE’S WITHOUT A DOUBT IN TRAVELING THE STATE FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS SIGNIFICANTLY MORE ENERGY AND DESIRE FOR CHANGE. NOW WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO WIN THREE OF THE FOUR CONGRESSIONAL RACES. WE CAN WIN THIS OPEN GOVERNOR’S RACE AND WE CAN WIN THIS OPEN U .S. SENATE SEAT WITH A CANDIDATE LIKE ME WITH PROVEN RESULTS OF BEING ABLE TO WIN IN RED ENVIRONMENTS,” Turek stated, expressing confidence in his ability to win in traditionally Republican areas.

Looking Ahead

With the Senate race in Iowa heating up and other statewide contests showing increased competitiveness for Democrats, the upcoming election cycle could mark a significant shift in the state’s political alignment. Voters will be watching closely to see if Turek’s populist message and grassroots strategy can translate into a victory against the incumbent, and whether this momentum can help other Democrats secure wins across the ballot.
