Hawaii Family’s Nightmare: Stranger Hid in Home, Planned “Transformations”

The Campbell family sought a fresh start in Hawaii, but their dream life turned into a waking nightmare when they returned from vacation to find their home invaded by a stranger with sinister intentions. The intruder, Ezekiel Zas, had not only occupied their house but had meticulously documented plans to perform “surgeries” on them, seeking to “transform” them into his own twisted ideal.

A Peaceful Life Shattered

In 2019, James and Britney Campbell, along with James’s two sons, moved to Oahu, Hawaii. James, serving in the US Navy, had brought his family from California for what they hoped would be a peaceful life. They settled into a comfortable two-story military housing home in a quiet Honolulu cul-de-sac. Britney, a former model, and James, a musician turned Navy serviceman, seemed to have found their paradise.

However, shortly after moving in, strange occurrences began to plague the family. Britney discovered boxes in the garage ransacked, with items strewn everywhere. She would hear the front door slam shut, only to find no one there, even when the doors were securely locked. These unsettling events created friction, making James and Britney question each other, wondering if one was playing tricks on the other.

The unsettling incidents escalated. A family calendar entry appeared in unfamiliar handwriting: “Your rehabilitation starts today. Do as I did. Choose a house, clean it, set up all devices.” A blanket they used for comfort vanished and reappeared neatly folded hours later. Most disturbingly, Britney noticed her laptop’s webcam light on, suggesting they were being watched.

A Terrifying Homecoming

In September 2019, the Campbell family left for California for a family matter. They planned to be away for longer, but an earlier flight brought them back to Oahu on September 20th. As they approached their home, Britney noticed James’s bike lying on the lawn, a clear sign something was amiss. The garage, usually tidy, was a mess.

Their front door wouldn’t budge. Someone was inside, pushing against it. A man’s voice calmly stated, “You’ve got the wrong place. This is my home.” James, armed with a sledgehammer from the garage, eventually confronted the intruder, who emerged wearing James’s clothes. The man was identified as Ezekiel Zas, 23, from Connecticut.

A Disturbing Discovery Within

Police arrived and arrested Zas, charging him with burglary. An initial sweep of the house revealed no other intruders, but the upstairs bathroom door was locked. When opened, it revealed the crawl space access above it was slightly ajar. The family was advised to conduct an inventory of their belongings.

What they found was horrifying. The house was ransacked. Clothes were scattered, and their cat had been fed a vegan diet of dried apricots. In Britney’s makeup cabinet, they discovered a shrine covered in bodily fluids. Knives of all kinds were laid out on a towel on their bed. On an old laptop, they found Zas’s diary, detailing his chilling plans.

The “Omnivore Trials” Diary

Zas’s diary, titled “The Omnivore Trials,” revealed his intention to abduct and perform surgery on each family member. He referred to the family as “ratlike creatures” and himself as a figure of transformation. He had been watching them for months, researching medical equipment and surgical procedures.

The diary entries detailed his fixation on transforming them into his ideal being, “Ezekiel.” He listed needed surgical equipment, including a jaundice treatment light, hospital bed, surgical tools, anesthesia machine, and life support. His descriptions of the family members were grotesquely distorted, attributing animalistic traits and bizarre ailments.

Zas had been hiding in the crawl space above the bathroom, observing their every move. He even wrote about Britney and James’s private desire to have another child, information they had not shared with anyone. He had researched anal reconstructive surgery and gender reassignment surgery.

The Intruder’s Background and Legal Aftermath

Ezekiel Zas, who went by “Freaky Zeke” online, was a wannabe rapper from Bridgeport, Connecticut. He had been reported missing by his mother in August 2019. A doctor in Honolulu had contacted his mother stating Zas was being treated there, but the doctor could not be traced. Zas’s journey from Connecticut to Hawaii remains unexplained.

After his arrest, Zas was charged with burglary but was released on supervised release pending trial. Eight days later, he vandalized a Buddhist temple in Honolulu and was arrested again. This time, he was not released.

Crucially, Zas was later deemed unfit to stand trial and committed to Hawaii State Hospital. The Campbell family, having endured the violation of their home and the terror of Zas’s plans, have reported suffering from severe PTSD. The case highlights the profound psychological impact of home invasion and the disturbing motivations that can drive such acts.
