Inslee Slams Trump on Economy Amidst Rising Gas Prices
Former Washington Governor Jay Inslee strongly criticized former President Donald Trump's economic policies and his response to rising gas prices. Inslee slammed Trump as 'out of touch with reality' amidst market turmoil and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He also warned of potential legislative efforts to shield the oil and gas industry from climate change accountability.
Inslee Criticizes Trump’s Economic Policies and Iran Stance
Former Washington Governor Jay Inslee sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy and the ongoing conflict with Iran. Inslee’s remarks came as the stock market experienced its worst day since the start of the war, with the Dow and Nasdaq losing nearly 1,000 points combined. The S&P 500 also saw a significant drop of 1.7 percent. While the stock market’s performance doesn’t directly reflect the entire U.S. economy, Americans are feeling the pinch. The national average for a gallon of gas has increased by a dollar in just one month. A new economic forecast suggests U.S. inflation could climb to 4.2% this year.
Strait of Hormuz Closure Impacts Global Markets
A major factor contributing to these economic pressures is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway is crucial for oil exports and the shipment of other goods like fertilizers. Disruptions here directly lead to higher prices for essential items, including food. Despite these clear impacts, President Trump downplayed the significance of the closure. He claimed the U.S. does not need the Strait and has ample oil supplies, stating, “We have twice the amount of oil as Saudi Arabia or Russia and soon it’ll be three times the amount.”
Inslee: Trump is ‘Out of Touch with Reality’
Governor Inslee expressed strong disagreement with Trump’s assessment. “Every so often about once every six years Donald Trump says something that is true. And he said something that was true yesterday. It was he doesn’t care,” Inslee stated. He argued that Trump is fundamentally detached from the concerns of everyday Americans who must balance budgets and afford necessities like milk and gas. “Because he does not care, he’s got us into this war that is the result of dramatically reducing the ability of people to pay their rent and get food for their kids,” Inslee added. He highlighted the significant impact of a dollar increase per gallon of gas, calling it a “big hit on families” that is persistent and not short-term. “He is just so out of touch with reality, first with families, and second with economics,” Inslee concluded.
Global Oil Market Dynamics
Inslee explained the fundamental economics at play, noting that oil is an internationally traded commodity. “When there is a reduction of supply anywhere in the world, it affects the price of oil and affects what we pay at the pump,” he said. He expressed concern that Trump’s policies are hurting Americans in his home state and elsewhere. The conversation around affordability is directly linked to the price of oil and gas.
Inslee’s ‘Paul Revere’ Warning on Climate Accountability
Beyond the immediate economic concerns, Inslee also addressed the ongoing climate crisis and efforts by the oil and gas industry to evade accountability. He compared his mission to warn colleagues in Congress to that of Paul Revere. Inslee expressed concern that the oil and gas industry is seeking an immunity provision from Congress, potentially passed in the final days of a session. This provision would shield them from legal responsibility for the costs their products impose, such as forest fires, hurricanes, and asthma. He accused the industry of attempting to deceive the public, similar to the tobacco industry, by creating doubt about climate science. “Their own scientists for decades now, for five decades now, the oil and gas industry executives have known that their product is going to cause catastrophic consequences associated with climate change,” Inslee asserted.
Comparing to Tobacco Industry Precedent
Inslee drew a parallel to the tobacco industry, where lawsuits have held companies accountable because their cases could be heard in court. He warned that a law shielding oil and gas companies from climate justice accountability would be a grave error. “The price of liberty is eternal vigilance,” he stated, emphasizing the need to be watchful against such measures. The industry, he believes, fears having their day in court and facing juries, especially when confronted with internal documents dating back decades that acknowledge the potential for catastrophic climate change. Instead of being honest, they have funded campaigns to create doubt about climate science.
Allegations of a ‘Corrupt Deal’
Inslee also made serious allegations regarding the influence of the oil and gas industry on the White House. He claimed there was a “billion-dollar corrupt deal at Mar-a-Lago” where industry representatives offered money to the President in exchange for cutting off Americans’ access to cheaper energy sources. He pointed out that currently, the cheapest forms of energy in America are solar and wind power, and efforts are being made to limit access to these resources. This, combined with rising gas and electricity bills, is placing a significant financial burden on American families. Inslee concluded by stating that President Trump’s apparent indifference to these rising costs is remarkable and suggests he is prioritizing appeasing his allies over the well-being of the public.
Looking Ahead
As economic pressures mount and the debate over climate accountability intensifies, all eyes will be on Washington D.C. to see if any legislative measures are attempted to shield the oil and gas industry. The public’s reaction to rising energy costs and the administration’s response will continue to be a key indicator of future economic and political developments.
