Hezbollah Strikes Israel After Iran Leader’s Killing
Hezbollah launched missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, prompting Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs. The exchange marks the most intense bombardment since the 2024 war, while Israel also suffered its deadliest attack with nine killed in a Bet Shemesh synagogue strike.
Hezbollah Retaliates Against Israel Following Iran Leader’s Death
Beirut and Israeli cities were rocked by intense crossfire overnight as Hezbollah launched a barrage of missiles and drones toward Israel, a direct response to the killing of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) retaliated with heavy airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, a known Hezbollah stronghold. This escalation marks the most significant bombardment of the Beirut area since the 2024 war between Israel and Hezbollah, with over a dozen explosions shaking the capital. Additionally, Israel conducted airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon.
Intense Bombardment Shakes Beirut
Residents of Beirut were jolted awake around 2:40 AM by the deafening sound of bombardment. Windows rattled as the Israeli army unleashed a series of airstrikes on the southern suburbs. Similar strikes were reported in South Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border. A statement from Hezbollah confirmed their responsibility for the rocket fire, explicitly stating it was retaliation for the death of Ali Khamenei. The Lebanese Prime Minister Salam condemned the rocket firings as “irresponsible.”
For the people here in Beirut and in the entire country, they are very much shocked. Um, these um people woke up to the sound of bombardment and we see that people from Dia, the southern suburbs of Beirut, but also the south of the country are now fleeing. The roads are entirely blocked.
The ensuing chaos has led to widespread displacement. Roads are reportedly blocked as residents flee the affected areas. The lack of adequate shelter facilities in Lebanon presents a dire situation, echoing the experiences of the 2024 war when many were forced to seek refuge on open streets. With winter conditions setting in, the cold adds another layer of hardship for those displaced.
Israel Reports Hezbollah Member Targeted
The Israeli army announced that they had targeted a Hezbollah member during their strikes, though details regarding the individual’s identity remain unconfirmed by Hezbollah. Such delays in confirmation are not uncommon, as observed during previous conflicts, where Hezbollah typically takes time to verify casualties among its leadership.
Israeli Media Predicts Extended Conflict
Israeli media reports suggest that the attacks on Lebanon could continue for several days, indicating a potential for prolonged hostilities. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in retaliatory actions, escalating regional instability.
Deadliest Attack Hits Israel: Nine Killed in Bet Shemesh Synagogue Strike
Meanwhile, cities across Israel also came under attack. Israeli rescue services confirmed that strikes hit multiple locations, with the central town of Bet Shemesh bearing the brunt of the assault. A missile struck a synagogue, resulting in the deaths of nine people. DW correspondent Tanya KMA visited the scene, reporting on the devastation.
An Iranian ballistic missile impacted a residential neighborhood in Bet Shemesh, a city near Jerusalem, with full force. David Lev, a volunteer rescue worker, described the scene as “very bad,” with rescue teams working to find anyone potentially trapped under debris. Tragically, some of the victims were en route to a shelter when the missile hit.
Unfortunately, we have a lot of um people who were killed here. Um they’re working on checking to see if there’s anybody else that is still stuck under the broken walls here and houses here. And uh hopefully uh hopefully those were our last ones and like again like I said it was a very bad scene.
While air defense systems are in place, they are not infallible. The direct impact of the ballistic missile in Bet Shemesh has been described as the deadliest attack in Israel thus far. The work of rescue services is fraught with risk, as air raid sirens can sound at any moment, forcing immediate evasive action.
Civilians Scramble for Safety Amidst Sirens
Since the commencement of US-Israeli military operations against Iran, civilians in Israel have been prioritizing safety, heading to shelters and protected areas. In Jerusalem, residents expressed a mix of fear and resolve. One resident stated, “I think the head of seven October is the head and it was time that will be eliminated. Um I hope that the Iranian people will join the peace process that over the Middle East.” Another described the scene as “absolutely horrifying,” witnessing families with children rushing to safety, while others, like one individual with a cat, also sought shelter.
The recurring sound of air raid sirens underscores the ongoing threat, leaving residents in a state of uncertainty about the duration and intensity of the attacks.
Looking Ahead
The current escalation between Hezbollah and Israel, triggered by the killing of Ali Khamenei and subsequent retaliatory strikes, signals a dangerous widening of the conflict. As both sides exchange blows, the international community watches with concern, fearing further regional destabilization. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this cycle of violence can be de-escalated or if it will spiral into a more widespread confrontation.
