The Iowa Hawkeyes are rolling, and the Arizona Wildcats are peaking at the right time. Both teams punched their tickets to the Elite Eight with impressive victories on the road to college basketball’s biggest stage.
Hawkeyes’ Coaching Masterclass Fuels Elite Eight Run
Iowa, led by the brilliant coaching of Ben McCullum, has advanced to the Elite Eight after a stunning upset over the one-seed Florida Gators. McCullum’s Midas touch for winning is legendary, carrying over from his championship success at Division II and his NCAA Tournament upset with Drake last year. Now at Iowa, he’s proving that his winning formula works at the highest level.
“All he does is win,” said Sean Farnum about Coach McCullum. “It doesn’t matter if he’s at Division 2, winning four national championships there. Doesn’t matter if he’s at Drake and knocking off Missouri in the first round last year, uh, or now at Iowa.”
The Hawkeyes’ path to the Elite Eight hasn’t been easy, but their recent performances show a team that has found its stride. They bounced the four-seed Nebraska Cornhuskers in a dominant fashion, creating a significant advantage in points off turnovers. Iowa held a remarkable 20-7 edge in that category, a key factor in their victory.
This win against Florida, coupled with their regular-season victory over Nebraska and a prior win against Florida, has transformed the Hawkeyes’ season. After struggling against top-25 teams with a 1-8 record in the regular season, Iowa now plays with a newfound belief and freedom. They’ve shown they can compete with anyone, executing at a high level, especially in their last two games.
Coach McCollum himself acknowledged the team’s journey, embracing the underdog role. “You can call it Cinderella whatever you want to. They just got to keep on moving on,” he stated. While some might hesitate to label Big Ten teams as Cinderella stories, Farnum pointed out the strength of their conference play, emphasizing that these are not your typical upsets.
Arizona’s Complete Performance Puts Them in Elite 8
On the other side of the bracket, the Arizona Wildcats showcased why they’ve been considered one of the nation’s most complete teams. After a slightly shaky performance in their previous game against Utah State, they delivered a masterful display against Utah State, leaving no doubt about their championship aspirations.
“It was the most complete game that they’ve played and it’s the most complete team in college basketball and has been for a majority of the season,” Farnum remarked about the Wildcats’ dominant showing. Arizona’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with six different players scoring in double figures. The freshman duo of K.J. Lewis and Braden Burries combined for an impressive 44 points on efficient 15-of-22 shooting.
Coach Tommy Lloyd’s squad has been exceptional all season, dispelling notions that they rely too heavily on three-point shooting. Their strength lies in their ability to dominate inside, scoring over 60 points in the paint with incredible efficiency. “They don’t shoot a lot of threes. Yeah, they don’t need to. They scored 60 plus points in the paint. Why are you going to shoot from the outside if you can shoot with such great efficiency all over the floor?” Farnum explained.
This commanding victory not only advances them to the Elite Eight but also helps them overcome a mental hurdle. Lloyd has led Arizona to the Sweet Sixteen three times in his first four years, with teams many expected to go deeper. This year’s squad has now surpassed those expectations, standing just 40 minutes away from a trip to the Final Four in Indianapolis.
With the Hawkeyes playing with house money and the Wildcats firing on all cylinders, the Elite Eight promises thrilling matchups as these two powerhouses continue their quest for a national championship.
