Students Escape Fiery Bus Blaze on Honolulu Highway

TERRIFYING MOMENTS unfolded on a Honolulu freeway when a school bus carrying members of the Kahuku High School girls flag football team caught fire. The bus, engulfed in smoke and then flames, was a frightening scene for the young athletes who managed to escape just in time. The incident occurred on a busy highway, creating a dramatic and dangerous situation.

“Like an Explosion”: Students Describe Fire’s Onset

Students on board described the initial moments of the fire as startling. Mia Lopez, one of the athletes, recounted hearing popping sounds that reminded her of gunshots. “It was like more of an explosion,” she explained. “It almost sounded like a gunshot, almost to me, like. But I think it was also because we were in a tunnel.” The enclosed space of the tunnel amplified the sounds, adding to the shock and confusion. “So it sounded much more louder and it echoed in the tunnel, but it just sounded like super loud, like it all like startled us,” Mia added. The team quickly realized the gravity of the situation when the smell of smoke filled the bus. “And we all like got up and were like, what the heck just happened? Because we didn’t know what happened. And then all of a sudden we could just start smelling a whole bunch of smoke. It was like a rubbery smell almost.”

Dramatic Escape and Loss of Belongings

Video captured by one of the students shows the team walking away from the bus as it burns. “I was in shock. I was like, there’s no way this is happening right now,” said another player. They watched from a safe distance as the bus, carrying all their personal belongings, became engulfed in flames. The fire escalated rapidly. “Then all of a sudden, like we heard something else pop. And then the flames just started in the back of the bus. And then like less within a minute, like the whole bus caught on fire.” The principal of Kahuku High School confirmed that the fire started after the coach smelled something burning, possibly a tire. This prompted the driver to pull over to ensure the students’ safety.

Heroic Coaches and Firefighter Response

The students were forced to evacuate onto the highway. “Because the fire is getting bigger. They were like, start walking on the highway, start walking on the highway,” a student recalled. They climbed over a barrier to get to safety. As they moved away, they could hear the fire growing louder and the sound of windows breaking. Fortunately, all students and staff escaped the bus without any injuries. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames, leaving behind a charred and smoky bus frame. The students praised their coaches for their quick thinking and ability to keep everyone calm during the terrifying ordeal. “Our coaches were amazing. They helped us stay calm. I think that was like one of the most amazing coaching staffs that I think we could have asked for,” a player shared.

Investigation Underway, Team Faces Challenges

As of this report, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire officials are investigating the incident. One of the student athletes mentioned that the bus seemed to dip to the left before the fire, suggesting a possible issue with a tire. The team is now facing a significant challenge as they prepare for an upcoming game next week. Many of the girls, especially those sitting towards the front, lost all their sports gear, including helmets, jerseys, and cleats, when the bus burned. They are working to replace these essential items before their next match. Despite the loss and the frightening experience, the team is primarily focused on their safety and well-being, expressing gratitude for escaping unharmed.

What’s Next for the Kahuku High Flag Football Team

The focus now shifts to how the Kahuku High School girls flag football team will overcome the loss of their equipment and the emotional impact of the incident. With an upcoming game, the community and school will likely rally to support the team in replacing their gear. The investigation into the fire’s cause will continue, hopefully providing answers and preventing future incidents. The resilience of these young athletes in the face of such a frightening event is a testament to their spirit and the support of their coaches and school.
