“Like an Explosion”: Students Describe Fire’s Onset

Students on board described the initial moments of the fire as startling. Mia Lopez, one of the athletes, recounted hearing popping sounds that reminded her of gunshots. “It was like more of an explosion,” she explained. “It almost sounded like a gunshot, almost to me, like. But I think it was also because we were in a tunnel.” The enclosed space of the tunnel amplified the sounds, adding to the shock and confusion. “So it sounded much more louder and it echoed in the tunnel, but it just sounded like super loud, like it all like startled us,” Mia added. Video captured by one of the students shows the team walking away from the bus as it burns. “I was in shock. I was like, there’s no way this is happening right now,” said another player. They watched from a safe distance as the bus, carrying all their personal belongings, became engulfed in flames. The fire escalated rapidly. “Then all of a sudden, like we heard something else pop. And then the flames just started in the back of the bus. And then like less within a minute, like the whole bus caught on fire.” The principal of Kahuku High School confirmed that the fire started after the coach smelled something burning, possibly a tire. This prompted the driver to pull over to ensure the students’ safety.

Heroic Coaches and Firefighter Response

The students were forced to evacuate onto the highway. “Because the fire is getting bigger. They were like, start walking on the highway, start walking on the highway,” a student recalled. They climbed over a barrier to get to safety. As they moved away, they could hear the fire growing louder and the sound of windows breaking. Fortunately, all students and staff escaped the bus without any injuries. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames, leaving behind a charred and smoky bus frame. I think that was like one of the most amazing coaching staffs that I think we could have asked for,” a player shared.
