Moore Urges Republicans to Remember Oath Amidst Trump’s Iran Rhetoric

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a decorated combat veteran, sharply criticized Republican lawmakers for their silence following President Donald Trump’s inflammatory social media posts concerning Iran. In an interview, Moore emphasized that elected officials take an oath to the Constitution, not to any individual, urging them to remember their duty to the people they represent.

Peace Talks Loom as Region Faces Uncertainty

The remarks come as peace talks between the United States and Iran are set to begin in Islamabad, Pakistan. Vice President Kamala Harris is leading the U.S. delegation, accompanied by Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law. The delicate diplomatic efforts unfold against a backdrop of heightened tensions and the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Military Might vs. Regional Stability

Drawing on his experience as a combat veteran with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, Governor Moore highlighted the limitations of military power in resolving complex regional conflicts. “We are asking our hard power assets, the kinetic assets of the United States military to somehow think they can control the destiny of an entire region,” Moore stated. He argued that such an approach is unsustainable and costly, with American families ultimately bearing the financial burden.

“The United States has the best military in the world. There’s no question about that. But we are asking our hard power assets… to somehow think they can control the destiny of an entire region. That is not sustainable. It is deeply expensive.”

Iran’s Strategic Patience

Moore drew parallels to historical conflicts like Vietnam, Iraq, and the ongoing situation, suggesting that adversaries like Iran can simply wait out American involvement. “Iran can, our enemy on the battlefield, can just wait us out because it’s not politically sustainable at home,” he explained. This strategy, he noted, is particularly relevant as domestic political pressures and economic concerns like rising gas prices can limit the duration of military engagement.

Trump’s Rhetoric Crosses a New Line

The governor addressed the alarming nature of Trump’s recent social media activity, including expletive-laden posts, derogatory remarks about Islam, and threats of “civilization obliteration” against Iran. While Moore admitted he was “not terribly moved” because such behavior has become a pattern, he acknowledged that for many, these statements represent a new low. He recalled Peggy Noonan’s observation that Trump’s actions have reached “some kind of new place and a new low.”

A Pattern of Broken Promises

Moore characterized Trump’s presidency as a series of broken promises. He cited Trump’s campaign pledges to lower prices, release the Epstein client list, and end foreign wars, asserting that “He lied to us each and every time.” This, Moore argued, explains Trump’s continued presence in office despite controversial actions and rhetoric.

A Call to Conscience for Republicans

Directly addressing Republicans in the Senate and Congress, Moore issued a powerful reminder: “You did not take an oath to him. You did not take an oath to Donald Trump. You took an oath to the Constitution, you took an oath to the people you represent.” He urged them to consider their integrity and the source of their authority, stating that if they are merely “bending the knee to an individual,” they should struggle to look themselves in the mirror.

Focus on Action, Not Just Words

Looking ahead to the midterms and the 2028 presidential election, Moore stressed the importance of Democrats focusing on concrete actions that benefit the people. He contrasted his approach as Governor of Maryland, which has seen historic investments in childcare, education, and public safety alongside drops in violent crime, with the perceived inaction and self-interest in Washington D.C. “We need ‘winter soldiers’ who are not just going to tell me what you want to do in the future… but I want to see what you’re doing right now to actually protect the people who need protection right now,” he stated.

Restoring Faith in Public Service

Moore also addressed voter frustration with corruption and the flow of money in politics. He shared his personal commitment to transparency by placing his assets in a blind trust and signing legislation requiring all future Maryland governors to do the same. This, he believes, is crucial for rebuilding public faith, especially in light of concerns about billionaires receiving tax cuts, insider trading, and the potential for self-enrichment by public officials. “We are going to have to be able to talk about how are we going to rebuild and think about this thing differently because the grift that is happening right before our eyes… is going to have long-term consequences about how this country navigates itself,” Moore concluded.
