GOP Lawmaker Demands ‘Aggressive’ AG Replacement
GOP lawmakers are divided over border security funding as one representative calls for a more "aggressive" Attorney General. The debate over funding and the upcoming replacement for AG Pam Bondi highlight internal party struggles. Meanwhile, concerns about birthright citizenship and FEMA's low disaster fund add to the political landscape.
GOP Lawmaker Demands ‘Aggressive’ AG Replacement Amid Border Funding Debate
Tensions are rising within the Republican party as a key lawmaker calls for an “aggressive” replacement for departing Attorney General Pam Bondi. This demand comes as the party grapples with internal disagreements over border security funding, with Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) expressing frustration over the proposed approach. The push for a new, forceful Attorney General highlights a desire for stronger action on issues the party views as critical.
Border Funding Debate Intensifies
Republicans are aiming to pass a funding bill for border security operations by President Trump’s June 1st deadline. Senator John Thune indicated that the GOP plans to keep the funding package as narrowly focused as possible to achieve this goal. However, House conservatives are voicing strong opposition to the current strategy. Sources revealed that some Republicans are unwilling to vote for any measure that would defund law enforcement agencies.
Representative Chip Roy, who is also running for Texas Attorney General, shared his perspective on the funding debate. While not present for a recent conference call, he received real-time updates from colleagues. Roy emphasized his firm support for the President and the administration’s goal of securing funding to counter Democratic obstruction. He stated that Democrats are refusing to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, effectively holding America hostage.
Roy believes Republicans are united in their desire to fund these agencies but disagree on the method. He pointed out that the Senate has lagged in passing legislation that the House has already approved, including sending full Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding proposals four times. Roy advocates for funding the entire DHS, suggesting reconciliation as a potential tool to overcome Democratic opposition without excuses.
“We can do anything we want by rule and with will. So let’s send a message to ICE and Border Patrol, to the entire country that, we stand behind them.”
Senator Ron Johnson echoed the sentiment that Democrats are being obstructive regarding agency funding. He also expressed concern that a reconciliation process, if not kept narrow and focused, could spiral out of control. Johnson hopes to fund all Republican priorities within DHS through fiscal year 2029, arguing that national security should not be used as a bargaining chip.
Roy, a friend of Johnson’s, believes their positions are not far apart. He proposed that the House should convene and fully fund DHS through reconciliation, sending it quickly to the Senate. This approach, he argued, would avoid splitting off ICE and Border Patrol funding and would signal continued commitment to securing America, a key promise of President Trump’s campaign.
FEMA Faces Funding Shortfall
Adding to the government’s financial concerns, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has warned that its disaster fund is running dangerously low. This warning comes as the nation approaches peak hurricane and wildfire seasons. Major upcoming events like America 250 and the FIFA World Cup also add to the potential strain on disaster relief resources.
Call for ‘Aggressive’ Attorney General
The departure of Attorney General Pam Bondi after one year leading the Justice Department has sparked discussions about her replacement. Deputy AG Todd Blanche will serve as acting AG. President Trump expressed his fondness for Bondi, stating she will move to an important private sector role.
Bondi described her tenure as the “most consequential first year of a Department of Justice in history.” However, Representative Roy is urging the President to appoint a more “aggressive” Attorney General. While he praised Bondi’s work in pursuing criminals, Roy believes the current administration needs to restore accountability and achieve justice.
Roy specifically mentioned the need to address what he sees as the weaponization of the Justice Department against political opponents. He called for accountability for individuals affiliated with what he described as Marxist networks funding Antifa, and for action regarding operations like “Arctic Frost” and individuals such as Jack Smith, John Brennan, and Jim Comey. Roy stated, “We want to see heads roll.”
He hopes the President will select someone who will be very aggressive in pursuing these goals, emphasizing the need to deal with issues like Antifa, which the President has declared a terrorist organization.
Debate Over Birthright Citizenship Heats Up
The conversation also touched upon the contentious issue of birthright citizenship. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the matter this week, following a Wall Street Journal report indicating that a significant percentage of international surrogate parents are Chinese. One Chinese billionaire reportedly has fathered 100 U.S.-born children through surrogacy.
Representative Roy has long been concerned about this issue. He highlighted the phrasing of the 14th Amendment and expressed alarm at the direction the Supreme Court’s questioning seemed to be heading. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Justice Gorsuch, and Chief Justice Roberts’ questions raised concerns for him.
Roy argued that the 14th Amendment was intended to address slavery, not to grant automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to individuals who are not citizens or legal residents. He fears that a broad interpretation could lead to millions of individuals gaining U.S. citizenship without proper legal standing.
“The idea is if you take the Supreme Court Justice’s questioning that give me pause for concern… if you take the direction they seem to be going to the logical conclusion, then if 20 million Chinese communists show up tomorrow, having babies tomorrow, do we suddenly have 20 million American citizens that are Chinese communist people coming here to the country to become American citizens? That’s insane.”
He expressed hope that the Supreme Court will interpret the amendment correctly, emphasizing that Congress should also act to support the President’s executive order on the matter. Roy is co-sponsoring legislation to address birthright citizenship, calling the current situation absurd and dangerous for the American people.
As the Attorney General of Texas, Roy vowed to fight this issue regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision, seeking support for his campaign at ChipRoy.com.
