Google Gemini Lets You Import ChatGPT Data
Switching from ChatGPT to Google Gemini? This guide shows you how to transfer your custom instructions, memories, GPTs, and project data. Learn the best methods to bring your AI context to Gemini without losing essential information. We cover manual copying and exporting techniques to ensure a smooth transition.
Google Gemini Offers a Path for ChatGPT Users
Many people are considering moving their AI work from ChatGPT to Google’s Gemini. However, switching can feel daunting because not all features work the same way on both platforms. This guide explains how to transfer your important information and settings from ChatGPT to Gemini.
Moving Your Account-Level Settings
Your AI assistant remembers details about you and your preferences. In ChatGPT, this context is stored in places like ‘Custom Instructions’ or ‘Memories.’ You can bring these over to Gemini by manually copying them.
For ‘Custom Instructions,’ open your ChatGPT settings. Copy the text from fields like your nickname or any personal details you’ve provided. Then, go to Gemini’s settings and paste this information into the ‘Instructions for Gemini’ section. You can add new instructions to Gemini by clicking the ‘add’ button and then pasting your copied text.
ChatGPT also creates ‘Memories’ that help it give you more personalized answers. To manage these, click ‘manage’ in ChatGPT. You’ll see a list of your saved memories. While there’s no automatic way to export them, you can review each memory. Delete any that are no longer accurate or relevant. Then, you can either copy each memory individually into Gemini’s instructions, or copy all of them together into a single block. Copying them one by one helps Gemini treat each piece of information separately. Copying them all at once puts them together in one instruction set.
Transferring Projects and GPTs to Gemini
ChatGPT allows you to create ‘Projects’ and ‘GPTs.’ Projects group related chats and information together. GPTs are custom chatbots you can build for specific tasks. Gemini has a similar feature called ‘Gems.’
Creating Gemini Gems from ChatGPT GPTs
The process of moving a ChatGPT GPT to a Gemini Gem is quite similar. In ChatGPT, copy the name and description of your GPT. Then, create a new Gem in Gemini and paste this information into the corresponding fields. You can also copy the ‘Instructions’ from your GPT directly into the Gem’s instructions.
Gemini Gems offer an ‘enhanced instructions’ feature, which can help you add more detail to your instructions if they weren’t very specific in ChatGPT. While Gems don’t have built-in ‘conversation starters’ like GPTs, you can add instructions at the bottom of your Gem’s settings to guide how it should begin a conversation.
A key difference is that Gems allow you to select a single ‘default tool.’ This can make the Gem more focused. Some of these tools offer capabilities beyond what’s available in ChatGPT, such as creating music or conducting deep research directly within the Gem.
If your ChatGPT GPT had attached files, you can upload them to the ‘knowledge’ section of your Gemini Gem. Gemini also has a powerful feature allowing you to link Google Docs. This means your Gem can automatically update with information from a shared document.
Replicating ChatGPT Projects in Gemini
Currently, Gemini does not have a direct equivalent to ChatGPT’s ‘Projects’ feature, which organizes chats into folders. However, you can replicate the functionality using Gems.
To move your project files, download them from your ChatGPT project. Then, upload these files to the ‘knowledge’ tab of a new Gemini Gem. If your project had specific instructions, you can find these in ChatGPT’s project settings. Copy these instructions and paste them into the instructions field for your Gem. You can give the Gem the same name as your project, like ‘AI work context.’ The main trade-off is that you will lose the ability to group your conversations within project folders in Gemini.
Handling Your Chat History
Unfortunately, there is no simple way to export all your past ChatGPT conversations and import them directly into Gemini as new chats. The complexity of different input methods and features in ChatGPT chats makes a direct import difficult.
However, if you have a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Teams account, you can export all your data. Go to your profile, then settings, and look for ‘data controls.’ Click the ‘export data’ button. You will receive an archive of all your chats and context within 24 hours.
While this export doesn’t import directly into Gemini, you can manually transfer important conversations. For chats you refer to often, copy the entire conversation text from ChatGPT and paste it into a new chat in Gemini. You can start the new Gemini chat by saying, ‘This is context from a previous conversation,’ followed by the pasted text. This allows you to continue the conversation with Gemini’s advanced tools and models.
Best Practices for Future Context Transfer
To make future transitions easier, consider saving your important context in plain text or markdown files. This way, you can quickly transfer your information to Gemini, Claude, or any other AI service you might use in the future. Having your context in separate files makes it simple to upload and use across different platforms without worrying if the service has the right information. This workflow ensures you can get to work immediately, regardless of future AI updates.
