FBI: Michigan Synagogue Truck Attack Was Hezbollah-Inspired Terrorism
The FBI has classified the March truck ramming attack on a Michigan synagogue as a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism. The attacker, who died by suicide during a shootout with security, sent disturbing messages before the assault, expressing intent to kill as many Jewish people as possible. The investigation revealed his radicalization was fueled by family losses in Lebanon and exposure to extremist media.
FBI Links Michigan Synagogue Attack to Hezbollah Ideology
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially declared the truck ramming attack on a synagogue in Michigan, which occurred in March, as an act of terrorism inspired by Hezbollah. The agency released new details just hours ago, shedding light on the attacker’s motives and the disturbing messages he sent shortly before the incident. The suspect died by suicide during a confrontation with security after ramming his truck into the building, an act that also set part of the structure ablaze.
Attacker’s Final Messages Revealed
Ten minutes before the assault, the attacker recorded a video in Arabic. In the chilling footage, he identified the gathering as the largest group of Israelis in Michigan and stated his intention to forcibly enter and begin shooting. He expressed a desire to kill as many people as possible, invoking religious sentiment. Officials confirmed that the suspect spent nearly two hours sitting in the parking lot with his truck loaded with explosives before carrying out the attack. During this time, he sent approximately 19 messages to his sister in Lebanon. These messages discussed martyrdom and shared videos from Hezbollah leaders. He also shared an image, a meme, depicting the Israeli flag with Hezbollah lettering and colors superimposed over it.
Motivation Tied to Family Loss and Radicalization
Investigators revealed that several members of the attacker’s family had died in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon just one week prior to the synagogue attack. This loss appears to have been a significant factor in his radicalization. The FBI pointed to the beginning of this year as the period when the suspect started listening to Hezbollah and Iranian media, marking the start of his radicalization. However, the planning for this specific attack began in earnest on March 9th. On that day, he purchased an AR-15 style rifle, ammunition, and other items from a local gun store. He also began searching for Jewish centers throughout the Detroit area.
Escalating Plans and Near Misses
The following day, March 10th, the suspect visited a local shooting range. He brought $2,200 worth of fireworks and purchased large water containers online, which he later filled with gasoline. On March 11th, he added photos of his deceased family members in Lebanon to a Facebook album titled “Vengeance.” On the day of the attack, he attempted to acquire more accessories. He also called his ex-wife five times in the hours before the assault. She contacted police, requesting a welfare check, but unfortunately, this occurred just minutes before he rammed his truck into the synagogue. Approximately 140 children were inside the building at the time. Fortunately, neither the children nor the teachers were injured.
Official Statements and Investigation Findings
During a press conference, the U.S. Attorney emphasized the attacker’s intent to kill as many Jewish people as possible, stating that his death was merely a means to that end. The attorney added that if the suspect had survived, he would likely have faced charges for providing material support to a terrorist organization. Officials also stated that their investigation has found no evidence of other individuals being involved or any other targets planned for this attack. The synagogue has recently shared photos online showing the aftermath, including charred hallways and melted photographs, highlighting the damage to a children’s center with shattered glass on the floor.
Looking Ahead
The FBI’s declaration solidifies the understanding of this attack as religiously and ideologically motivated terrorism. As the investigation continues, authorities will likely focus on any potential foreign connections and the broader implications of such inspired acts within the United States. The community’s resilience in the face of such violence, along with ongoing security measures at places of worship, will remain critical points to monitor.
