Epstein Survivors Blast Melania Trump Over Hearing Call
Epstein survivors are criticizing Melania Trump's call for public congressional hearings, stating it re-traumatizes victims and deflects from accountability. Survivors argue they have already shared their stories and seek justice, not further emotional distress. The First Lady's motives are being questioned, with some suggesting she aims to distance herself from the scandal.
Epstein Survivors Criticize First Lady’s Call for Congressional Hearings
More than a dozen survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse have spoken out against First Lady Melania Trump. They accuse her of shifting blame after she urged Congress to hold public hearings with victims. In a statement released recently, the women said they had already shown great courage by coming forward and giving testimony.
Asking them to relive their trauma now is not justice, they argue. It is a way to avoid responsibility. Marina Lacerda, one of Epstein’s youngest survivors and a signatory of an open letter, expressed her frustration.
Nobody has done nothing, but yet you want to re-traumatize us and ask us to go in front of Congress and tell them our story, which we’ve had told some of them already. So now you want us to tell them again on their oath and re-traumatize us and then do absolutely nothing. That sounds like a sh**ty idea. It sounds like you’re just trying to shift attention from something to something else. So how does this benefit the Trump family, is my question.
Survivors Seek Accountability, Not Re-traumatization
Lisa Rubin, a senior legal reporter, explained that many survivors feel similarly to Marina. Rubin noted that Marina was a minor victim in the 2019 indictment of Jeffrey Epstein. She was abused starting at age 14 in New York.
Many survivors, especially those like Marina who have spoken publicly, feel they have already carried a heavy burden. They want more answers from Congress and the Department of Justice. They do not want another chance to simply be heard.
While some survivors might appreciate the First Lady’s attempt to recenter their stories, Rubin cautioned. She stated that if this comes at the expense of a real investigation into those responsible for the abuse, it is unacceptable. Survivors are growing frustrated with what they see as incomplete and poorly managed investigations.
Melania Trump’s Motives Questioned
Will Sommer, a senior reporter at The Bulwark, suggested that Melania Trump’s actions were likely for her own benefit, not the survivors’. He believes she may be trying to get ahead of a potential story or manage public perception.
Sommer pointed out that Melania Trump has previously denied a close relationship with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. She has also stated that Epstein did not introduce her to Donald Trump. These statements come after she has already secured retractions from publishers over similar claims.
It remains unclear what specific story Melania Trump might be trying to preempt. However, Sommer suggested it could be related to upcoming reporting that she is concerned about. This move has, perhaps unintentionally, brought renewed attention to the Trump family’s past associations with Epstein.
Examining the Trump-Epstein Connection
Lisa Rubin reminded listeners of the established facts regarding Donald Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. While Melania Trump described her connection as casual, Donald Trump’s relationship appears to have been more significant.
Journalist Michael Wolff recorded hours of conversations with Epstein. In 2017, Epstein stated that Donald Trump was his closest friend for ten years. Furthermore, in 2002, when Epstein first gained public attention, Donald Trump was quoted by New York Magazine.
Jeffrey Epstein liked beautiful women perhaps as much as he did, although on the younger side.
Rubin emphasized that these words do not suggest a casual acquaintance. Additionally, the former Palm Beach County Police Chief told investigators in 2019 that Donald Trump had called him. Trump reportedly thanked the chief for reporting on Epstein, implying he was aware of the situation.
Rubin concluded that there is a clear disconnect between what Donald Trump now claims about his relationship with Epstein and what was known at the time. She suggested that Melania Trump’s recent actions might be an attempt to distract from this association. However, these efforts may be backfiring, drawing more attention to the Trumps’ ties to Epstein and Maxwell.
A Strange Public Relations Move
The First Lady’s call for hearings has been described as a strange public relations move. Will Sommer noted that many people were not focused on Melania Trump’s connection to Epstein before her statement. Her comments have now brought that association back into the spotlight, potentially creating a Streisand effect.
The situation is particularly confusing given Donald Trump’s own statements. He has often sought to distance himself from Epstein, calling the topic old news. This contrasts sharply with his wife’s call for more investigation.
The timing is also questionable. The Trump administration has previously tried to move past the Epstein association, viewing it as a public relations problem. The First Lady’s actions seem to put her husband in an awkward position, creating daylight between their public stances on the issue.
Looking Ahead
Melania Trump’s statement has unexpectedly intensified scrutiny on her and her husband’s past connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Survivors feel their pain is being exploited for political purposes. The public is left to question the true motives behind the First Lady’s call for congressional hearings. What further revelations may emerge regarding the Trump-Epstein relationship remains to be seen.
