Dusty May Commits to Michigan, Ends Transfer Portal Speculation

The confetti has settled, the nets have been cut, and the national championship trophy is safely in Ann Arbor, but the biggest question surrounding the University of Michigan basketball program has been answered. Head coach Dusty May has officially committed to staying with the Wolverines, putting an end to rampant speculation about his future and potential moves to other programs.

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, May directly addressed the rumors that have swirled since the team’s triumphant NCAA tournament run. “For all of those Michigan fans, they have nothing to worry about,” May stated confidently. He emphasized his family’s commitment to Ann Arbor, noting that his son is currently a sophomore in college and he wouldn’t consider leaving while his son is still on track to graduate from the University of Michigan.

A Family Affair and a Place to Call Home

May shared a touching sentiment about his family’s journey. “We moved around a lot when we were young, Rich, and to find a place we’ve settled in and that feels like home,” he explained. This deep connection to Michigan is a driving force behind his decision to remain at the helm.

He also spoke about his wife, Anna, and her unwavering support throughout his coaching career. “She always worked and supported our family and worked and raised the boys,” May said, expressing deep gratitude for her sacrifices, especially during his early, lower-paying coaching days. He credits her supportive nature and big heart with helping him become a better man and coach.

Building a Championship Culture

The conversation also delved into the process of building a championship-caliber team. May highlighted the importance of player development and transparent communication with current players. “We tell the guys we have an idea of what it’s going to look like. It’s penciled in now,” he said, explaining how they brought in key players like Elliot Kadour, Adai, and MZ, while retaining players like Will Cheddar, Namari, and Yakel.

He specifically praised the growth of players like Adai, who has become a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. “We watched Adai’s film back with the Spanish national team… and he had a really really special skill set with his footwork, passing and things like that,” May recalled. He admitted that he and his staff had to grow too, learning to trust Adai’s playmaking abilities even when they led to turnovers early on.

Reflecting on the Championship Moment

The joy of winning the national championship was palpable in May’s voice. He described the moment as surreal, likening it to what other coaches have described after reaching the pinnacle of college basketball. However, he also admitted a touch of sadness at the thought of not seeing his players in the gym the next day.

“I hate that that’s the way my brain works, but you instantly start thinking about the transfer portal and whatever the case so you can get back to Detroit next year,” May confessed, a common sentiment among coaches immediately after a championship win. But his commitment to Michigan is now clear.

A Nod to the Past, A Vision for the Future

May also reflected on his beginnings as a student manager for Bob Knight at Indiana. He believes Knight would be proud of his journey, seeing it as a way to carry on his legacy as an elite teacher who cared about people. “He he would definitely be proud because of, you know, this is a way to carry on his legacy as as someone that was an elite teacher and someone that cared about people,” May stated.

Looking ahead, May and his staff are already busy preparing for the next season. “The portal opened at 12:01 last night and our staff… they were already scrolling through the portal to see who’s officially in it,” he revealed. Despite the immediate challenges of roster management, May expressed his excitement about the potential to be consistent national championship contenders at Michigan.

“We’re going to have a roster together, we can start planning our spring and summer workouts and then we can take a deep breath and maybe take a trip up north to enjoy this run we just went on,” May concluded, looking forward to both the hard work ahead and a well-deserved break.
